||The Lancer Maxi is the product of 10 years of design evolution directed at producing a good all round boat for tough leisure use, be it diving, fishing, water-skiing or just exploring. It is the sporty, high speed, fun boat of the range. For heavier or more demanding use the Professional should be considered.
Essentially, any inflatable gives good load capacity and safety in what is a small lightweight boat. However few inflatable have succeeded in incorporating features that help to give a comfortable dry ride. Thanks to creative "Kiwi" ingenuity the Maxi incorporates a number of advanced concepts.
LIGHT WEIGHT and HIGH SPEED
1. DESIGN CONCEPTS
Amidships sheer. Unlike most inflatables which are long and flat with a sharp turn up in the bow the Maxi starts to rise amidships with a gentle sheer that:
a) Helps the water to strike at an oblique angle which avoids jarring the crew.
b) By starting to rise amidships it increases the "V" section in the Keel which gives a sharper wave piercing bow.
2. KEEL DYNAMICS
a) Lengthwise the keel is designed to prevent a pressure wave building up under the bow and then being forced back along the keel to the stern. The motion of this pressure wave results in the boat having a "porpoising" motion as the pressure wave rolls under the boat, only to be followed by another and another. A really sea sick motion.
b) The bottom attaches on the side of the keel to produce a sharp skeg under the boat. This improves the efficiency of the keel and steering ability. It also focuses wear onto the chaffing strip.
c) The keel is an integral part of the floor and doesn't lie semi attached between the floor boards and the bottom. This means that in the Maxi any grit or fish hooks etc falling into the bilge is trapped in the keel hinge area where it can not do any harm. It means that grit in the bilge doesn't lodge between the keel and the bottom and wear holes in the floor. It is all but impossible to keel grit out of the boats.
a) The aft part of the boat is braced longitudinally and remains rigid to give the crew a firm region while the front part is free to flex and absorb wave shock.
b) When used with higher powered motors the thrust of the motor is transferred against the back of the floorboards which in turn forces the floor boards into the bow. Left unchecked this would peel or chaff the bow. The typical solution is a thrust board which takes the load behind the bow and leaves the bow floppy, often buckling in surf. Lancer have a paten on a dummy bottom that uses the pressure in the floorboards to brace the aft side of the bow well above the normal position overcoming the floppy bow and wearing forces.
4. BOW SHAPE
Where the bow splits the waves the Maxi is very sleek to ensure the water strikes obligingly. This is in contrast to the big blunt bows on most inflatables. Being light and easily thrown by waves it is important to soften wave impact by every means possible.
5. DRY HULL SHAPE
Lancer was one of the first inflatable designers to use the tubes to deflect the waves downwards, rather than fixing the bottom to the underside edge of the tube. The latter almost sucks the spray around the tube and into the boat.
