|'Ocean Brumby' is well known on Pitttwater. She has been the start boat for the PAC yacht races for 10 years and is regularly seen on these waters. A perfect sized and beautifully built boat she would make the ideal family boat. Her huge aft deck or cockpit is equipped with a collapsible table and is large enough to entertain 12 people for lunch! (We know, we have seen them quite often happily moored in Towlers Bay or the Basin!)
Owned by 12 years by her adoring owners, she has been maintained to perfection and lavished with all the love and care she deserves as a stately old lady. Her electrical engineer owner upgraded her with numerous little improvements, as much for comfort as for safety, including several bilge pumps, high water alarms (2 of them), warning lights for engine temperature or faulty alternator (not that these were ever needed), bow spotlight for ease of finding your mooring at night, electric toilet, up and down electric anchor winch, powerful solar panel, etc.
Built as a crab trawler for her Russian refugee owner in 1945 and baptized 'Nyanza', she was used as commercial fishing boat until 1977, when she was then bought by a couple who used her on the Georges River as pleasure fishing and leisure boat with their family until 1995. During this time a new Ford Lee 85HP engine was fitted. This engine was bought as a near-new motor previously used as a secondary engine on a fishing boat. To this day, the engine starts 'first-go', presents beautifully, and has been regularly maintained. It is reliable and economical, using about 8L of fuel per hour at cruising speed (8 knots).
In 1995, the boat was sold to Lauren Wehbe, who renamed the boat 'Ocean Brumby'. Lauren Wehbe also kept the boat on the Georges River. 'Ocean Brumby' was bought by Bernard Schaffler, her current owner and long-standing member of the prestigious PAC in November 2003. Significant improvements and additions have been made to the boat in the 12 years that he has owned the boat.
Dry, beautifully painted and built to the most stringent guidelines as a trawler in survey, 'Ocean Brumby' is a tight, dry and all around perfect boat. Her decks were fiberglassed in a way to prevent rain water or moisture compromising the timber. She was fully re-caulked in 2010.
With a well positioned helm allowing for good visibility and comfort when steering for long period of times, she is a pleasure to use in all weather. Her cockpit is also fitted with clears and an awning, which make the back deck pleasantly warm even on cold winter days. The side panels and side deck clears are removable, or can be open to allow the breeze to cool the boat when needed. The cockpit also houses the galley, with her cleverly hidden bar fridge, sink and storage cabinets. A BBQ, hit plate and gas cooker is also hidden inside the cabinet, sliding out when needed and kept out of view and the weather when not.
The interior of the cabin is a delight, with beautiful all-around views of the water, a saloon/dinette sitting 4 comfortably, a side-bench with more storage and the helm station, which is fitted with its own side door.
behind a small timber gate is access to the forward section of the boat, where a comfortable double bed provides just the perfect place to spend the night. Although the 'legs' part of the bed are below the floor of the saloon, the largest, 'head' part of the bed provides very good headroom and is high enough to sit up in bed reading or relaxing. The paintwork is fresh and free of mold and the whole boat feels fresh and dry, unlike many timber boats who can become musty in winter.
Regretfully offered for sale 'Ocean Brumby' will be the joy of her future owners. She is easy to handle even for a very beginner, is equipped with everything needed to enjoy a superb holiday on the water, provides plenty of room for all your friends and family to come for lunch, and is easy and cheap to maintain. Basically all that is needed is a good salt water wash after use, an antifoul each year, her engine serviced every 100 hours and a coat of paint every 5 years or so. She is handed over without any needed repair, and with all her equipment in perfect working condition. Her owner is also happy to make himself available to her new owners to 'hand over' the boat and explain how everything work (not that anything is complicated) and to ensure that 'Ocean Brumby' has a gentle introduction to her new family!
