|The majestic 'Preana' is one of a kind. She literally represents a gilt edged investment for anyone seeking a lucrative financial return, promotional avenues or anyone seeking to add to their collection of fine things.
Originally launched in Hobart in 1896,'Preana' led an extremely diverse life in and around the Port. Like many vessels of this era, she eventually fell into disrepair. In 1992 she was rescued from the muddy banks of the Derwent River by the Preana Trust, whose ambition it was to preserve a vital part of Hobart's maritime history. This resulted, in a daunting project over a considerably long period of time. 'Preana' has now been lovingly restored to her original condition, completing the project in 2009. Many of her original parts and fittings were "souvenired" over the years and lost to the restoration team. Those parts that could not be recovered have since been painstakingly hand made again. For example, the full set of fine tableware features the 'Preana' crest, which has been recreated by local artisans. All of this adds to the exceptional value of the vessel.
On boarding 'Preana' one steps back in time more than 100 years into an ambiance of Edwardian opulence, enjoyed by the aristocracy of this era. It is the plush, soft velvet upholstery in the magnificent main saloon, the warm glow of polished rare (Tasmanian) timbers and the glint of brass and silver lit by a crystal chandelier that creates this truly unique ambiance. Added to this is the mellifluous sound of the steam driven machinery in the open engine room, transporting one to a by-gone era.
'Preana' is without a doubt one of Australia's most significant historic vessels - she is Australia's oldest wood fired steam yacht.
In many ways her meticulous restoration establishes the benchmark against which all other steam yacht restorations can be now be judged.
As befits a vessel of her distinction, 'Preana' has a regal life of her own - according to SquareRigMaster, YouTube, 3 Jan, 2013 (see video in image gallery in this listing) "Preana is the most beautiful boat in Australia". 'Preana' has been given pride of place in Hobart's famous Constitution Dock and it is from here that she is operated as an exclusive charter in and around Hobart for up to 12 guests.
This one-of-a kind vessel is now 'For Sale' with the Preana Trust seeking opportunities to discuss her many attributes with interested parties who will be in a position to maintain and use 'Preana', either commercially or privately, in the manner to which she has become accustomed. The Trust will also consider a comparable asset exchange, eg real estate etc., to the same value.
