Minena a 1924 classic yawl. GREATLY REDUCED IN PRICE
'Minena' "Min - ee - nah" was custom built Ching Ngai Shipyards Hong Kong in 1924 for her original owner Commodore Harry T. Barnes of The Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Canada.
In the 1920's 'Harry' was known to be in intimate contact with the prohibition American whisky trade and John "Black Jack" Bovier, JFK's father in law. The JFK silver dollar on the pantry door commemorates his use of the yacht.
It was no surprise that Commodore Barnes spared no expense in her construction for the "trade". The hull, as well as deck, is built of the best 1.25" thick Malabar Teak on Oak frames. Designed for speed, she was also fitted with an early twin cylinder 15hp Kelvin combustion engine and the 'latest Bermuda yawl rig'.

The original design was by Ted Geary of Seattle and was modified by Thomas Halliday in Vancouver. Look at Sparkman and Stephens "Dorade" can you see any difference? Minena is 42 feet on deck, length overall 54 feet (including bowsprit and mizzen boom) and 12 feet beam. Her spars are solid Oregon, her main mast reaching 54 feet above the deck with a main boom of 24 feet and a mizzen boom of 12 feet. Total sail area, including (the later fitted) self-furling genoa, exceeds 1,500 square feet, yet because of the raked bow and counter stern, her water line length is only 34 feet. She weighs in at over 23 tons, with 7 tons of cast iron on her full length keel and cement filled bilges. She draws 7 feet and having a ballast to weight ratio of at least 45%, she can therefore, safety handle full sail in over 20 knots. She has recorded up to 12 knots under full sail, with winds of 25 to 30 knots plus but I admitted the gunnels did get a bit wet!
In Sydney, in November 1991, Minena was entered in the 'Vintage & Classic Yacht' race commemorating the opening of the Sydney Maritime Museum, Minena won 1st place in a very competitive field of 20 classic yachts, including some ex Sydney to Hobart racers.
Eleven years on and with very little maintenance under her last owner, she went from one of the best, to a severely damaged, water logged hulk in Sydney harbour. On the slip the teak hull showed its true durability and strength, even after years under water where the oak frames rotted and the iron knees corroded the hull was still 99% sound.
Restored in 2011 Minena has been in the iconic Tasmanian Wooden Boat festival ever since but due to ill health the owner has to sell her to a new custodian. That is who you will be, the custodian of this part of her voyage, as Minena is "living history".

Minena is one of the early, small, classic yacht designs of the 1920's, a forerunner to the Sparkman and Stephens "Landfall" and "Sirocco" yawls. If you like S&S designs Minena is the twin of "Dorade" just 10 years ahead of her time. Olin Stephens in his 90th year said Minena's designer, Ted Geary was one of America's finest yacht designers. Now 3 exquisite S's yawls are making Tasmania home and you could own one of them.
