|Bavaria 49 Ocean Cruiser
Bavaria yachts have a very proud history in Europe and a reputation as tough, no-nonsense cruisers, that has spread worldwide. Celina 1 is set-up as a very capable World Wide Ocean Cruising flagship. The 49 is a Bavaria is one of the biggest and most luxurious of the range, the build quality and strength for which the marque is renowned is hereditary throughout the Bavaria range. Stepping on-board through the transom door, the size of the 49 is immediately evident. The expansive cockpit ahead of the twin wheels looks like you could host an AGM in it. Covered by a dodger and bimini, certainly gives protection from the elements. With six 2-speed winches in total, 2x 44,2 x 48 and 2 x 56.2 adorning the cockpit and all halyards and controls leading back to the cockpit certainly adds to the boat's short-crew ability. The wide decks provide easy access to the foredeck, where there is plenty of area to both work when required or just laze about while cruising.
Bavaria's are certainly not lightweights. They are big, strong yachts designed to take on oceans and heavy weather, once you get into about 15-20 knots they certainly come into their own.
The rig is set-up with a furling main sail and Genoa which makes sail handling very easy and fast when it needs to be. With an average 12-15 knots, the 49 cruises comfortably at about 7 ½ knots into the breeze and when bearing away she`ll be trucking along at 8.½ knots with eased sheets. The big Bavaria weighs in at 11,000kg dry, and while this might sound a lot, it has the benefit of carrying the yacht through the fickle soft spots in the breeze - and through a seaway without losing much speed or upsetting your drinks too much. The helm is light and the Bavaria responds well in most conditions. Overall, it is an easy boat to sail - especially with the furling main and Genoa.
Bavaria yachts are roomy, and the 49 certainly takes full advantage of the 4.46m beam. Around the dining table, you could comfortably seat eight to ten for dinner or drinks.
The U-shaped galley to port is fully equipped with gas stove and oven, fridge, freezer, twin stainless-steel sinks and heaps of stowage for extended passages. Opposite of the galley is the chart table, which has plenty of room for electronics and storage and even offers a handy tool compartment under the seat. There are ensuites aft on the port and starboard sides, adjoining the two aft double cabins are roomy with cupboards and drawers sufficient to stow gear for a week, a month or more. Moving forward, there are two separate bunk rooms, 4 beds in total, a third ensuite and the large double cabin in the bow all with cupboards and drawers, even with the door closed there's plenty of room to move around without feeling claustrophobic. The yacht is big on amenities, accommodation and living space. Up top, the cockpit can cater for a party under a boom tent at anchor or with a head of sail up. It's an easy boat to sail places, with plenty of seats for guests.
Motion on the Ocean
The boat has a good solid motion through the water, off the breeze, the 49 enjoys reaching, as Bavaria's are known to do. On the nose, bring the nose up and you can maintain a good heading at 6-7 knots in about 12-5 knots of wind.
The self-stowing anchor and windlass help with anchoring for the night. The a big, deep cockpit make the yacht safe to get around. Twin wheels assure the helmsman of a good view forward.
The engine, a Volvo 75hp Turbo diesel with Sail-drive, to has the grunt to motor along at 8 knots in relative silence and little effort. Fuel capacity of 320lt is sufficient to get you to the next port should the wind fizzle.
Cruisers can take comfort from the Bavaria reputation for building strong hulls that meet various certifications including CE. The company uses solid, hand-laid 'glass below the waterline, Kevlar in the bow area, structural fibreglass floors, and foam-cored sides above it. All bulkheads and most furniture, which is lined in signature mahogany veneer, is cut using CNC machines and glassed to the hull.
