Vltava is a 78 foot on deck stay sail schooner built in Wilmington, CA by Jan Popisill and launched in San Pedro in 1976.  Hull construction is of the strip plan method, using old growth Douglas Fir for planking and laminated Oak for the frames.   Decks are plywood core with a teak overlay (reportedly replaced in 1998 by S. A. L. T. S. )  She was originally fastened with Galvanized fasteners. Over the past year this vessel has been undergoing a major restoration.   She was hauled out for almost 2 months while having some planks repaired.   The planks are 1 ½ inch thick.   The replacement planks were made of mahogany and only areas where damage was found were replaced.   New planks were both epoxied and fastened with bronze fasteners.   Approximately 10 frames were sistered where needed.   She has a new through hull for the engine exhaust.   After all underwater parts were serviced, she had an epoxy barrier coat applied to protect against any future worm damage and 2 coats of fresh Hemple bottom paint with 3 coats at the water line. Also all soft wood on the cabin top and sides were replaced and the entire cabin house was epoxied and re fiber glassed.   New bronze port holes were installed throughout the cabin sides.   All topsides and deck water ways and hull were repainted. She now has a complete new propulsion system including rebuilt 8 cylinder Detroit diesel with twin turbos and 375 hp.   It has an Allison transmission with coolers and filters.   She has a new steering system made from SS including new cables and quadrant.  She has two new generators:  a 3 cylinder Yanmar (3JK2LT) 20kw and a 4 cylinder Yanmar (4JH2L-T) 22kw. All interior woodwork was repaired where needed, and repainted or revarnished.   Bilges were cleaned and painted.   Fuel and water tanks were cleaned and inspected and found to have no leaks.   She has 2 new electric Raratan heads (not yet installed).   Also included but not yet installed is a radar, GPS and VHF radio.   A new depth sounder was installed at the haul out. Vltava was used by her second owners for a youth circumnavigation which was completed in 1978, and a movie was made about the trip. Her layout is designed for a maximum use of space, with 3 double cabins and 9 fixed single berths.   She has two head compartments, one aft and one forward.   The galley is offset to port and is huge for cooking for large groups.   The dining table across from the galley has seating for 10 and can convert to a sleeping area for up to 6 youths. She was also used by a previous owner for a day charter snorkeling/excursion boat carrying a 50 passenger/6 crew rating.   She was successful enough that those owners were able to save enough money to build a 200 passenger catamaran.  The most recent previous owners used the boat as a non profit organization educational supply and sail training vessel to support the small village schools in the Sea of Cortez. The current owner has been supervising the restoration project and has her about 80% finished.   Currently she is floating in front of the boatyard who has been doing the project. This boat was US built and has the potential to be brought up to US Coast Guard inspected standard if you wanted to have a sail training ship certified to take passengers in US waters.   Details about remaining 20% to be finished can be provided upon request.
