Down in Maine before the advent of the power boat, practically all the shore fishing was done in small sloops known as Friendship sloops. These were so named because they originated in the town of Friendship, Maine, and were exceedingly able as they had to work all weathers, winter and summer, and they were also fast in a breeze. They (for their time) had a world of room, a beam ratio of about one to three and a draft ratio of about one to six. This means they have volumous interiors and cockpits. Simply rigged with a small headsail and oversized rigging, they are easy to sail, reef and safe when the going is tough. Light on the tiller and capable in anything from the lightest breeze to the heaviest gale. The spars are solid oregon and believed to be original (all NEW rigging 2015).
Originally the friendship sloop had clipper bows, but later ones (incl Irex II) were built with an attractive short spoon bow. Again the later ones (like Irex) had both internal and external ballast, allowing the skippers to alter and shift ballast depending on the loads to carry and trim. These boats were used primarilly for fishing but they were also useful as family boats in the summer time and some of the larger ones did freighting at times.
The construction of IREX is particularly strong, all "the right" ingredients and as such although she has recently been professionally refitted, she is in remarkably original condition.
IREX II was built in Lavander Bay by Holmes for local Sydney sailing legend - Hal Harpur. Hal owned IREX II for many years and today Hal is honoured annually by the Wooden Boat Association of NSW with the Perpetual Trophy for (Hal Harpur Award) which is actually a painting of IREX II running before a strong breeze.
