EXCLUSIVE BUILDERS of Rogers 10.5

Rogers 10.5 - the spacious cruising cat

CONCEPT: Primarily designed as a roomy live aboard, with a big boat feel, a spacious saloon with all-round visibility was a priority, as a large percentage of time aboard is usually spent there, or in the cockpit. However, this does not mean sleeping accommodation has been compromised, as ample bunk space is available in the three suggested layouts. Shower and head provide plenty of real room for live aboard or weekends away. The galley in all layouts is comfortable and convenient for preparation of meals for family and guests.

The Rogers 10.5 has proved to be a well behaved, roomy catamaran, with a good turn of speed in cruising trim. Being a smaller catamaran than today's average cruising yacht means that running, maintenance and mooring costs are kept to a minimum.

CONSTRUCTION: The Rogers 10.5 is fully hand laid, using state-of-the-art 20 and 15mm pvc foam, knitted fiberglass fabrics, vinylester and polyester resins, with the bilges being solid glass for toughness in the event of grounding. The main bulkheads are built of 18mm hardwood ply fully encapsulated with fiberglass. Standard bolt-through areas (e.g. winches, stanchions, cleats, etc.) are cored with hard plastic to prevent crushing of the foam core when fittings are bolted down or loaded.

HANDLING AND SAILING: The Rogers 10.5 is comfortably sailed single handed if need be, with head sail sheets and winches easily managed from the cockpit. Tacking is made less of a chore with standard working blade jib, which passes easily in front of the mast. An over lapping Genoa can be fitted for extra horse power as can be a self furling "screecher", flown from a prodder attached to the forward beam for off the wind performance. No nonsense slab reefing has been chosen for ease of use and reliability, and with lazy jacks to contain loose sail while shortening the main, reefing is made a relatively easy task.

A flat standing area in front of the mast makes for secure footing and good access to the necessary winches, though reefing lines can be led back to the cockpit to minimize time on deck. With the small working head sail, the main only needs be reefed with the deepest reef being able to handle 30 knots, plus.

Large lockers forward make it unnecessary to bring headsails or spinnakers into the boat, keeping inside dry and uncluttered. Windward performance is enhanced with centreboards fitted as an option, and once again being a manageable size craft, centreboard operation is a breeze. While the Rogers 10.5 is not an all out racer, this catamaran will maintain good average speeds whether empty or in cruising trim.

AUXILLIARY POWER: One outboard has proved to be sufficient for effective manoeuvering in marinas and moderate seaways, twin outboard installation is also offered as an option. 9.9 four stroke's have been the favourite, with high thrust and good fuel economy, this horse power will push the Rogers 10.5, with a clean bottom and no head wind at 6.5 to7 knots.

With single engine installation, the outboard is attached to the steering cables, so that in the down position the outboard turns with the rudders, making maneuvering in tight confines manageable. When the outboard is raised activating lines loosen, so that the sailing helm remains light. In effect, with this configuration the craft can start turning before moving forward or aft.

IN CONCLUSION: The Rogers 10.5 is a family friendly boat, with the ability to go anywhere you wish. We can supply this boat as a shell for the skilled amateur to complete, or to any stage through to the finished boat.
