High Court Sale of 710 dwt Tweendeck Vessel by Public Tender

On instructions from the High Court in Christchurch, New Zealand this vessel is now offered for sale by Public Tender. The vessel "Rangatira" was built in Norway at A. S. Nordsovoerftet, Ringkobing 1970 this handsome small tweendeck vessel has served the Chatham Islands from Timaru for many years and has been laid up for 2 years due to financial circumstances. The vessel would be suitable as a Pacific or Caribbean island trading. She is 49.75m loa and draws 3.47m when laden. She has a break bulk cargo capacity of 1159m3 accessed through a single hatch served by derricks mounted forward and aft. Main engine is a Danish built Callesen type 427 FOT, 6 cylinder turbocharged slow speed diesel runs at 400 rpm, 750 HP. Fuel usage at eco steaming 9 knots is around 1400 - 1500 litres per day including generator, depending on sea conditions. Special Survey was due in 2015 and this has lapsed. Tenders are to be submitted within the above time frame to SeaBoats NZ as detailed in the tender documents. The seller retains the right to sell the vessel prior to the close of tenders.

Service Speed: 9.5 knots Main Engine: 690 HP MACHINERY AND ENGINEERING The vessel is propelled by a single Callesen 427 FOT 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine, which develops approx. 690 hp at 425 rpm. The engine is rigidly mounted and drives through a hydraulic gearbox to a variable pitch propeller. The engine is air started and is fitted with a belt driven generator at the front end. The air compressors are electrically operated with back up compressor in the forecastle The engine room also includes a variety of electric pumps, compressors, Oil reservoirs and filters and electrical control gear. There are five fuel tanks and two-day tanks with a total capacity of 93,160 litres. Fuel consumption is 1800 l per day at sea The vessel has a service speed of 10 knots There is 25,900 litres of fresh water carried in 3 tanks. No desalination plant is fitted. Instrumentation is also provided for all engines including alarms. The engine room is fitted with a fixed Halon flooding fire-extinguishing system. The rudder room at the aft end of the engine room has the hydraulic steering rams, rudder indicators and the autopilot relay.
Safety Gear
The vessel was operated under MNZ SSM and was equipped as required. Specific equipment includes;

The belt driven generator on the main engine is a Marelli with 40 kva output.

Auxiliary generator is a John Deere powered Northern light generator with 60 Kva output.

There is a separate Scandia air-cooled 48 kva generator unit in the forecastle.

The primary electrical DC system is 24volt but a 12volt supply is also provided. AC battery chargers are provided for both DC systems.

The AC service is 380volt and is supplied from the onboard generators. The vessel is also set up with 240 / 400volt AC from a shore side supply.

The primary electrical distribution panels are located in the engine room, with some individual circuits controlled from the bridge.
Electronics / Navigation
The bridge is full width and has access out to the deck each side. The central helm station has the engine and propeller pitch controls along with basic engine instrumentation. The general watch keeping equipment is each side with the navigation and communication area aft to port.

Deck Gear
The single hold has a tweendeck with steel beams and removable timber decking. It has been set up for general cargo as is, and can also be penned up for livestock transportation.

The hatch dimensions are 24.60 x 6.00 meters with a total hold capacity of 1159 m3.

On the foredeck is a single anchor winch with twin chain gipsy's and capstans. They are set up with 2 chain anchor rodes and stockless anchor. There are several bollards, and fairleads. There is a single mast on the foredeck for navigation lights. This mast also previously had a crane derrick but it has been removed.

The main hold has pontoon type hatch covers with aluminium cover boards and portable beams. The hatch is sealed with tarpaulins and wedges driven into securing cleats.

There is a derrick at the aft end of the main hatch that is set up with lifting gear. This is all controlled with hydraulic endless winches on the deck around the base of this derrick.

The aft main deck is set up with fairleads and bollards.

The bridge deck has 2 small hand operated gear cranes.

The Rangatira is a geared tween deck general-purpose cargo vessel and features a conventional raked stem and a canoe stern. She has a single main engine driving a single variable pitch propeller.

The bridge and accommodation decks are located aft with a single large hold. She has a crane derrick aft.

The vessel has been set up to handle general cargo and livestock.

The hull, decks and superstructure are welded steel with plating on steel transverse frames, girders, beams, stringers and watertight bulkheads.
The hold and tankage are all integral and part of the hull structure.
The rudder is a single Becker type on a shoe.


The vessel has 2 forecastle areas with access from the foredeck.

The cargo hold has deck access from hatches fore and aft.

The crew accommodation is aft, below the main deck and around the engine room casing. Forward to starboard is the engineer's cabin with an officer cabin aft of this. There is another officer cabin forward to port.

Aft port and starboard are 2 berth crew cabins. There are laundry and shower facilities between the officer and crew cabins to port with storage areas to starboard. Right aft is the steering flat.

The main deck has access from aft into the accommodation area and has the crew mess aft to port with the galley forward of this. The galley also has access out to the port deck.

Aft to starboard are toilet facilities. Further forward to starboard is the officer's mess and forward again is the master's quarters.

From the main deck, aft there is access to the engine room, the lower accommodation area and up to the bridge.

The engine room is on 2 levels and contains most of the machinery and electrical control gear.

The bridge deck has all ship controls and navigation and communication equipment.
