Wanderer is based on a traditional lifeboat design. She has had many improvements in my 3 years of ownership including having the original solid Oregon mast replaced with a lighter aluminium mast. This has markedly improved her rolling moment and made her much more stable in a beam sea and at anchor.
This has also improved the sail arrangements as well.
Wanderer loves a following sea and is quite seakindly in a head sea too. The enclosed wheelhouse is great in inclement weather.
Other modifications include, propellor repitched at last slipping (March 2021) as the engine wasn't under proper load. This has increased her cruising speed by 3/4 of a knot without changing the fuel consumption of 2.5 ltrs per hour @ 2000 rpm with a boat speed of 6.8 knots in calm water.
I have fitted dinghy davits, a diesel heater and tidied up the electrics somewhat and replaced a number of the old switches with circuit breakers. A 120 watt solar panel has been fitted along with a Morningstar Solar Charge Controller.
Single lever engine controls were fitted a year ago along with new cables.
Wanderer is Carvel planked inch and a quarter Huon Pine and battened seamed so she has a tight, dry hull. The decks are one and three quarter inch Celery Top Pine. The Yanmar engine was fitted in 2009 and has low hours and been regularly serviced.
I am currently in the process of repainting the cabin tops and deck but the weather has slowed me somewhat. With the approaching longer days I hope to have this done soon.
Wanderer has been entered into 5 Australian Wooden Boat Festivals in her time.
