It's 2020 and time to act on our fossil fuel consumption. If you're keen to minimise your environmental impact seriously, then look to traditional and alternative methods of travel and navigation.

The Pacific Proa was first launched in the 1200's. Usually consisting of two parallel hulls of unequal length, the smaller of the two is kept to windward while tacking involves 'shunting' the main which rotates and the dual direction hull is reversed. Despite the advances in boat building throughout the decades, the Proa's simple construction and sailing technique has little changed, requiring only the wind and a base of water to move at considerable speed.

Gaiasdream is a Pacific Proa which follows the same principals and design as the traditional proa using sustainable materials for propulsion where we see vegetable oil replacing diesel. Built by esteemed yacht designer and navigator Yvette Wijnen, she is the largest known Proa of her kind in the world.

Designed for transporting cargo and with a circumnavigation in mind Gaisdream was built from Plantation pine using the West system. Her Nissan engine has been marinised and modified to only require diesel to start and then she can be switched over to vegetable oil - an environmentally friendly fuel that is cheap and easily accessible.

She is controlled by dual rudders and helms on the main hull. This allows the vessel to 'shunt' (tack) by reversing direction. Gaiasdream carries dual Raymarine autopilots, wind and navigation instrumentation and can carry up to three times her weight while still making speeds of up to 20knots.

The Bridge Deck houses a Captain's cabin with additional double cabin sleeping quarters fore and aft in the main hull. Multiple pipe costs can sleep several more crew or be replaced with cargo (such as food or building supplies and tools suitable for outer island communities of the Pacific).

Gaisdream is sailed with a mainsail (set on a fixed main mast) and twin furling headsails. All sails are in excellent condition and were fitted following a reconfiguration of main mast and Forestway in 2016. Her power sources come from 4 x 400ah batteries, 600w of solar and wind generator. She has a 1000w inverter, VHF radio, sat receiver and a Foruno commercial grade GPS, with AIS.

This PROA would make a wonderful, safe and reliable vessel for fast, environmentally sustainable long distance voyaging, research or climate change campaign vessel.
