Lilith 37 - The story
"Lilith 37" a classic yacht was built in 1939 just prior to the WW11 by an independent boat builder in Sydney G. Davies for Mr Thompson "Tommy". It is believed the construction was halted for some time as the owner went off to fight in New Guinea. Lilith was Designed by G. Wynn. Many wrongly attribute the design to a Wally Ward design who built a number of similar boats after Lilith was built. Mr Ward was inspired by the design and subsequently the Carmen class of Swanson Bros and therefore the front runner for the Swanson range of double ender boats.
The name Lilith is biblical in origin and refers to a spirit which inhibits storms and violent weather conditions. The number 37 is the sail number which was registered by the AYF.
Lilith 37 was launched and fitted as a flush raised deck sloop and sailed out of RANSA & RSYS for many years and was a familiar sight on Sydney harbour, well known for her extremely tall mask and radical fractional rig. In 1986 Lilith participated in the Balmain vintage yacht race. History also tells us Lilith was a regular participant in the Sydney to Lake Macquarie regatta.
In the early 1980's the deck was replaced with a Brazilian mahogany timber truck cabin. A new masthead rig was also fitted. There are six port holes, a forward hatch providing good ventilation.
Lilith has been a regular participant in the RMYC Timber boat festival, Newport and the Classic Wooden Boat Festival at the National Maritime Museum for several years.
In 2013 a full-time restoration was undertaken including the installation of a new Craftsman Diesel motor. Lilith and her new motor continue to work like a charm. Restoration and continual maintenance is ongoing by her boat builder owner to ensure Lilith is well-looked after to her deserved charm. Lilith undergoes annual anti fouling & painting of top sides and a motor service. A well-presented yacht that anyone would be proud to own.
