Palana, a pretty king billy pine centreboard yawl, Tasmania's hope for the 1962 Sydney-Hobart is now for sale. Designed by Arthur Robb and built by master boat builder Max Creese in Hobart, following the finest Tasmanian traditions, she has been lovingly cared for with beautiful original Oregon masts (main and mizzen).

Professionally maintained and very original, she sails as well as she looks. Spacious below with good light and air make her a useable classic.

The hull is 1¾" strip planked king billy on 1¾" square Tasmania oak frames. The backbone and frames are of celery top pine, all copper fastened. The cabin coamings and trim are varnished teak. Down below the wood trim is Tasmanian myrtle.

The mainmast is a 41' Oregon with a single set of spreaders. The mizzen mast (second shorter mast) is Oregon. The roller reefing main boom is also Oregon. NOTE: there are 2 masts in place, some photos were taken with the mizzen mast removed.

Palana has a draught of just 4' (board up) or 6'8" (board down). Her bronze centreplate weighs 3.5 cwt is housed in a stainless steel lined case. It is operated by the cockpit by a modified car steering box. Ballast is 2¼ tons of lead. A well maintained Perkins 4108 diesel drives a 2 blade prop, cruising at 5+kts.

6 berths. Accommodation is forward with the focscle fitted out to sleep 2. The saloon is spacious with a wide cabin sole, settee, pilot berth and folding leaf table. A generous eutectic fridge-freezer means that even the thirstiest crew will be well catered for. There is a separate head and ample storage and hanging lockers.

Palana is a Tasmania Aboriginal word for The Stars. Ready for cruising or racing, Palana behaves well at sea even when running hard. Her hull shows an easy entrance, full bridges and a very long run.

In her inaugural Sydney Hobart she placed 13th across the line, won the Royal Hobart Regatta in her class and more recently won the Australia Day Regatta in her class. Palana competed in the 1962,1963 and 1965 Sydney Hobarts and features in the CYCA archives.
