THE 2016 SPIRIT MARINE/THE YACHT BROKERAGE BENETEAU CUP AND FRENCH YACHT CHALLENGE
RQYS
29-30 OCTOBER
The Beneteau Cup is in its 11th year and going from strength to strength with the continued support from Spirit Marine/The Yacht Brokerage which is now in the hands of new principal Peter Nicholson.
The Beneteau Cup Regatta is organized by a few enthusiastic Beneteau Owners, who formed the Queensland Beneteau Owners Group, QBOG in 2006. The original idea was to create a forum for Beneteau yacht owners and crew to exchange information regarding maintenance and operation of their boats. The Group then progressed to organizing a regatta to bring crew together and encourage cruising boat crews to experience the joys of racing.
To this day, although we have a performance division and a cruising division, our biggest fleet is the cruising division. For many boats this was initially a once a year experience of racing, however now many go on to enjoy racing and progress to broader horizons, As we have always presented a French theme at our regattas, after a few years, with encouragement from other French Yacht owners, it was decided to include a one day invitation race for all French Yachts., the French Yacht Challenge, This year after many requests, we have extended the French Yacht Challenge to both days, The French Yacht Challenge is open to all French production yachts.
The regatta starts out on Saturday with a typical French breakfast, where crew from all the boats dress up in French attire and parade before the Judge, Sara Egan, from Yacht Style and a previous Beneteau owner.
The QBOG committee has always felt that the social aspect of a regatta is important.
A special prize is presented to the best dressed crew which last year went to the crew from "Satisfaction", a Yacht Share boat based at Manly, being a Jeanneau 39i.
The regatta, hosted by Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron consists of two passage races with two divisions - Performance and Cruising for both the Beneteau Cup and French Yacht.
Competition is strong in both divisions and everyone will be trying to topple last year's champions who will all be back to defend their titles:
Beneteau Cruising Division champion, "Ocean Gem", David Hows, a Beneteau 445 from SYC has been doing a lot of regattas this year and will be lining up to fight to hang onto his trophy.
Beneteau Performance Division was a very close result with a tie between two RQYS boats - Rod Johannessen's First 40.7,"Drakes Prayer" and Dave Waller's First 50,"The Matrix". "Drakes Prayer" won on count back.
French Yacht Challenge, cruising Division was won by Sally and James Crowley's First 30,"Sahara"
French Yacht Performance was one by David Redfern's First 40,"Not a Diamond".
Once again this year Yacht Share is supplying a spectator boats, one of which is a Lagoon. So that, friends and family members who are not Sailing can be on the water to watch.
Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and Entry are on the RQYS web page.
For those interested there will also be a brand new Beneteau Oceanis 45, courtesy of Yacht Share on display for those interested in the latest in style from the Beneteau Group.
