INTRODUCING THE MAGNIFICENT 1937 CECIL BODEN DESIGNED CUTTER ENA II.
With the effects of the Great Depression easing by the mid 1930's in Australia, the boat builders of Sydney were enjoying a resurgence of pleasure boat building!
Mr Charles Wesley a prominent Sydney Surgeon and the direct descendant of Charles and John Wesley the founding fathers of the Methodist Church, commissioned G. Beattie and Sons of Balmain to build a new cruising yacht!
Recently remarried after the death of his first wife, Charles christened his new Yacht ENA after his new bride Mrs Ena Wesley nee Turnbull.
Launched in January 1937, ENA originally a ketch was designed by then up and coming marine architect and "Brilliant Young Methodist" Cecil Edwin Boden who had obtained a Degree in Marine Architecture at Glasgow University Scotland the home of the worlds most distinguished yacht designers including William Fife and George Watson. This influence is evident in both ARCHINA and ENA.
Cecil Edwin Boden was the driving force behind the first Sydney Aquatic Show held in 1932 where his designs were on display! Later in 1933, Cecil Boden had designed ARCHINA, built by James Hayes and Sons for Jim Howie. ARCHINA competed in the first Sydney to Hobart yacht race and has since been restored to sail again in the Sydney to Hobart races, her most recent one in 2022.
Charles Wesley maintains his ownership of ENA until 1953 when she was sold to R. C. Griffiths, Balgowlah C/O Sydney Amateur Sailing Club and for the first time was registered on the Lloyds Register of Yachts as ENA She was listed on Australian Register of Ships as Ena II. By the 1980's ENA was now in Queensland and owned by shipwright Robert Beckett. Robert took ENA II to Hawkes Shipyard Airlie Beach and there removed her decks, old interior and completely re-ribbed and re-fastened the boat! A new deck of 2 x ½" marine ply and epoxy soaked then laid with ½" white beech, was added along with new coach house of Red Bean Mahogany. Robert also rebuild the interior which remains in magnificent condition to this day!
ENA II now resides in Central QLD where her fastidious owner has maintained her to the highest standard! ENA is ready to sail wherever the new owner desires. She is well set up for cruising with comfortable room for 6 people with all the amenities including a spacious galley while many of her beautiful original fittings still abound! Despite her size she is easily sailed by one person but two would be perfect!
ENA II is 44.5ft on Deck and 50ft Length Overall. Beam of 12.5ft Draft of 6ft. She has a lead keel of 6 tons and displacement of approximately More boat history lots of photos and details on my website https://yachtena. Page. Ti
