Kaleula has taken me on an amazing exploratory tour of the GBR from the Swains reefs in the south to north of Lizzard Island and even into the coral sea, with the aim of seeing the reef before its too late - and it was an amazing adventure. This was done with ease and comfort in a strongly built rigged and well equipped vessel. She is Australian registered and ready to go sailing now! A beautiful bright turn key pilot house sailing yacht. Kaleula is currently sailing the East Coast of Australia. We are in Melbourne.

Kaleula was Australian built by Challenger yachts in SA in 1994. It has a great open layout with only 2 steps from the cockpit to the raised saloon/pilothouse; full 360 visibility and ability to steer the boat via autopilot from the safety and comfort of the saloon.

Just one step takes you down into the galley, also offering great visibility and light with windows on both sides. Forward is the master cabin with a generous v-berth, complete with large 2 cupboards, underberth storage and 4 opening ports (great when you are on anchor to get airflow through the boat) and an overhead hatch.

The aft cockpit and steering position at the stern allow for a large cockpit which is fully enclosed by clears to keep the waves and the rain out! no need for seaboots just ugg boots, makes night watches a dream and if you dont want to be in the cockpit then you can stand watch from the pilothouse.

With a balsa core hand-laid hull, fin keel and full skeg-hung rudder the boat is much faster on the underside than the practical pilot house would suggest! She weighs in at 8400KG empty (certificate provided)

The boat has been set up for long distance voyaging with a focus on redundancy on critical systems and the ability to live off-grid for a long time: 2 autopilots, 2 chart plotters, 2 separate speed and depth instruments, 2 dinghy, 2 outboard's (8hp Mercury and 2 hp Honda four stroke - very light ) 2 separate solar charging systems, 2 fridges and is Australian registered and ready for adventure.

Work done before the big trip.

Rudder gland packing and rudder bearing replaced.

Under deck autopilot with octopus hydraulic linear drive with custom extra strong Fiberglass mounting platform going to seperate bronze tiller arm on the rudder stock (1 1/4") autopilot has a remote control so the vessel can be steered from the pilot house. There is also a fully independent wheel pilot.

The cockpit drains were replaced and upsized with new skin fittings.

5w AIS class b with masthead antenna

NMEA 2000 network is installed on the boat which integrates the chart plotters, AIS and speed and depth.

2 chartplotters Raymarine A7 in the cockpit which is touchscreen and wifi, and A50 at the nav station. VHF icom IC-45, HF Barrett 550 with KISS counterpoise and insulated backstay for the antenna.

Electrical Upgrades done in 2018 include upgrade of house battery bank to 600AH, S
second solar charging setup with a 330w panel and VictronConnect MPPT regulator which is Bluetooth compatible and upgraded the old panels to 100w new panels(280w with a Plasmatronics controller),
Installed an air X 400w wind generator with ammeter on removable pole (for slipping and when not cruising/ power not needed).
BEP dual voltage sensitive relay and emergency parallel cluster.
Victron BMV 712 smart battery monitor also bluetooth compatible.

The mast was removed in early 2019 and all ss rigging replaced. The mast was inspected and all sheaves serviced at this time. The mast is aluminium and has not been painted. The mast is a substantial section with welded sheave boxes, crane gooseneck fittings, winch bases etc. It is a single spreader rig masthead rig with forward and aft lowers with an inner forestay for the storm jib. The spinnaker pole was new for the trip.

While the mast was out all the electrics in the mast have been replaced including new antenna wires and electrical wires. This includes LED tri and anchor light, steaming light, extra bright led deck lights and new wind transducer and a 4g antenna on top of mast with wifi modem giving internet up to 40nm to sea ( had reception at Lady Musgrave and Middle Percy)

An all new lazy jack system with dyneema and low friction eyes was installed, as well as changed Jib sheet blocks to reduce friction and clear the deck were installed.

Sails have all been serviced in 2018 there are 2 Genoa's a triple reef fully battened main, a spinnaker in a sock and a storm Jib which hanks onto the inner forestay.

The engine is a reliable Volvo Penta 2003T which prior to the big trip had extensive preventative maintenance. Turbo replaced, engine compression tested, injectors serviced, new primary fuel filter housing, heat exchanger and oil cooler removed and cleaned inspected and pressure tested. All rubber hoses and seals on the cooling system were replaced along with a new exhaust elbow and ss insert. The fresh water pump and salt water pump were also removed and fully serviced. The sail drive seals and prop (3 blade fixed) were also replaced. Morse controller and both throttle and gear cables have been replaced.

There is an engine driven Watermaker which will produce 80L of fresh water per hour once installed.

The galley has a full size oven stove and grill which is gas (2 of 9kg bottles) and is a remote solenoid to turn the gas on and off remotely as well as 2 gas detectors. There is a gimbaled upright fridge/ freezer (140L) as well as a large chest fridge/ freezer (95l). The double sink has pressurised salt water.

There is an electric head( all seals and impeller replaces in 2019) with holding tank and a seperate shower which is supplied by a 100l hot water service (engine and 240v)

Bilge system includes a manual bilge a 1100gph automatic bilge pump, and a high water alarm. There is also an emergency 2000GPH roaming emergency bilge pump.

The boat is wired for 240V which services the microwave and hot water service, battery charger and power outlets. There is a 15amp shore power cable and a 2000w projecta inverter for appliances while underway (will run the microwave at sea).
