This is a wonderful opportunity to own a classic timber racing yacht that has been restored to 'bristol' condition with out regard to cost.

Mistral was built by Max Crease (well known Hobart shipwright) at his Battery Point yard (Hobart) for a chandler Guy Rex (of RR Rex and Sons). She was launched on Thursday 13th October 1966. Four boats were built, the first being Theme for Peter Cole (sailmaker who later turned his hand to yacht design) to a design by Peter Cole and American yacht designer Bill Luders. I understand that Bill Luders was commissioned by Cole to draw the lines and Cole completed the design (scantlings, etc). Luders is better known for yachts such as the 12 Metre "American Eagle". Mistral was re-rigged after losing the mast in 1970 (then owned by Bill Cooper)and an extra 4 feet (?) added to the mast height, taking the total height from 43ft to 47ft above deck. For many years the Theme, Mistral IX and Serica (still in Hobart) competed against each other on the Derwent. The fourth hull is Tanami which is currently on Sydney harbour.


The boat was hauled and placed in a semi-permanent hardstand in late
September 2008 for a full assessment and repair program. In order to undertake a
full inspection the mast was removed and all interior fittings and the majority of
interior joinery was removed.
Immediately it became apparent that while the carvel planked mahogany hull
had kept its shape and was overall in very good condition, extensive repairs to
the frames, floors and internal structure would be required to ensure the hull
retained its integrity for the long haul. The very extensive restoration that was
undertaken is summarised below.

Engine
The Yanmar 15hp was removed & flushed out. Engine was compression tested. Engine
was degreased & washed down. Remove starter, alternator, electrics & check. Remove
gearbox, drive plate, flywheel to inspect & clean. Remove all surface rust & prep engine
for painting. Service engine. Service items include oil, fuel & air filters. New water pump
& alternator belts. New impeller kit & caskets. Replace gearbox seal, zinc anode &
thermostat. Replaced exhaust mixer elbow. Fit new cav fuel filter assembly & run new
fuel lines. Drain fuel tank, flushed & cleaned. Adjust taco & gearshift. A complete strip
down and overhaul was not considered necessary and the engine was prepared
for eventual reinstallation in the boat after completion of structural work.
Engine Beds
The engine beds were completely removed and replaced with kiln dried spotted
gum hardwood glued and fastened to the frames.
Shaft, Log and Propeller
The original shaft log was reamed out and replaced with a stainless steel tubing.
The original stern gland was replaced with a PSS mechanical shaft seal water
lubricated from the engine water intake. (http://www. Shaftseal. Com/about ). The
folding propeller was removed and overhauled.
Hull Frames
Frames from aft of the engine beds to forward of the forward bulkhead were
sequentially removed and replaced with laminated kiln dried Tasmanian Oak.
These were scarfed to the upper ends of the original frames on average two feet
below the sheer strake. A number were replaced altogether. These were through
hull copper riveted and roved to the hull. In addition the frames were all glued
in place. Cast & fit new silicon bronze housing & bung.
Floors
All the floors were found to have varying degrees of decay, blocked limber holes
and were covered with laminated ply. All the floors were sequentially removed
and replaced with laminated, kiln dried Tasmanian Oak members using the
originals as patterns where possible. The new floors were glued and fastened in
place with epoxy and copper and bronze fastenings.
Mast step
The original mast step was removed and replaced with a member laminated
from kiln dried Tasmanian Oak. The new mast step is considerably longer than
the original in order to spread the load more evenly to the floors and keel.
Cockpit and Steering
The steering pedestal was disassembled and refurbished. At this time the
steering quadrant, shaft and bearings were checked and the rudder shoe
refurbished. All the paint and varnish work in the cockpit was removed and
minor rot was repaired.
Bulkheads
The bulkhead at rear of cockpit was largely replaced. Repair was everdured, primed
& painted. Cockpit seats were remove & refurbished. Cut out lower third of main
structural bulkhead. Glue, screw & scarf in new marine ply to bulkhead repair.

Plumbing
All the plumbing on the boat was removed and replaced. The sink and icebox
were refurbished and new corian bench tops were installed. A freshwater
bladder was installed under the floor in the forward compartment (partly to
improve trim) and new pump and tap installed. All skin fittings were replaced
with bronze and old skin fitting apertures were properly scarfed and sealed. A
new electric toilet was installed.
Electrics
All the electrics on the boat were completely replaced. New pilot and navigation
lights were installed at the top of the mast as was a wind indicator serving the
Ray Marine instruments. New mast wiring was also installed. Deck flood light
was rewired and spreader lights installed. New DC battery switch cluster,
MFDC31 calcium battery, MFST 31 calcium battery and timber/brass cabin lights
were installed. Ray Marine A50 GPS colour plotter and Ray Marine ST60 analog
wind kit were installed. VHF and AM/FM radios were installed as was solar
battery charging. Two new bilge pumps were also installed.
Interior Furniture
All the interior furniture was removed and either replaced or refurbished. New
bunks were installed in the main saloon.
Paint and Varnish - Interior
Before installing the engine or the interior furniture but after floors, engine beds,
frames and mast step were installed the entire interior of the hull was completely
saturated with everdure. The single pack paint system comprised of two coats of
grey primer, two undercoats & 2 topcoats. All interior furniture was stripped
back before recoating. After installation of the furniture three to four coats of
satin varnish were applied.
Varnish & Paint work exterior
All exterior varnish work was stripped back to bare timber. A total of 10 coats of Werdal
gloss varnish applied to all brightside work. Cockpit and cabin top repainted. Clean
& restored teak deck, cockpit seats & cockpit floor.
Re-spray topsides
Removed all old paint from topsides back to bare timber. After sand back, applied 3
coats of everdure to topsides. Sprayed 4 coats of Interprotect epoxy primer to topsides.
Spray 4 undercoats using Alwcraft 545 epoxy primer. Finished off topsides with 3
topcoats using Alwcraft 2000 series polyurethane.
Sails and Rigging
The rigging was thoroughly inspected and serviced. All winches were stripped
and serviced. The furler was greased and serviced. Sails were sent to North's
Sails for inspection and resewing as needed. Remove all chain plate bolts, clean
& inspect. Refasten chain plate bolts in a bed of epoxy glue.
Boat Strips
Replaced cove line, name & rego numbers for new in UV vinyl tape.
The boat was delivered to the owner on Thursday 9 April 2009.
