Remarks
Built in 1957 by Montgomery's Shipwrights in Brighton, Victoria, from NZ Kauri, Minerva was associated with the Sandringham YC, before coming to Tasmania in the 1980s.
Minerva has had several custodians since, and has spent most of her Tassie years at home in the Channel, namely Kettering and Barnes Bay.
Trophy plates adorn the interior, mostly bearing the name of R. Aldridge. Roger was a colourful character who raced Minerva very competitively, working on the principal that he only need to complete every twilight race to win the series! The current Minerva crew added a trio of trophies in 20-21 when we took out the KYC Division 3 season.
Minerva has the feeling of a boat that has always been loved, and she gives back in spades. It really feels like Minerva always has your back!
Over the 3 years of my custodianship, we've competed regularly with the KYC. Some conditions suit a H28 more than others, but she's always a joy to be out on.
We've cruised up and down the Channel on many trips and regularly taken her up to the city for a weekend on the tiles!
At the beginning of 2021, we did a lap of Bruny Island and, while the conditions were largely benign, Minerva behaved beautifully in larger swell off the south coast.
Minerva is a classic, traditional Herreshoff 28, and has that "sea kindly" behaviour often attributed to the L. Francis Herreshoff design.
I don't really want to sell Minerva, but temptation got the better of me and I have acquired a 1962 Robb 35 sloop in teak (final image). I cannot become a fleet owner. I've seen what that does to people's lives! And Marco Polo is something of a project boat and I'll need the dosh to fund the work, so Minerva is, a little reluctantly, up for sale.
Each custodian has done a little more to her to ensure that Minerva is not only in top shape, but gradually improved and made even more sea worthy. The peace of mind from knowing such improvements have been made is priceless.
Her Kauri hull is fully splined and was taken back and anti-fouled in July 21. Her topsides were prepared and painted beautifully by Chris Moncrief.
Hughes Marine installed a new Volvo Penta 21hp in 2014 (now 350 hours), along with a new exhaust, waterlock and hoses etc. Regularly serviced, the 21hp Volvo is easy to live with and pushes Minerva along easily in any conditions.
A dismasting in September 21 (a scarf above the spreaders gave way due to delaminated glues) launched Minerva onto her latest round of serious long-term improvements. The Oregon mast was not only repaired at the break by Jonathan Minnebo, but totally rebuilt. The new scarf, using new fined grained Oregon, now is now very long, bridging above and below the spreaders, and all other potential issues were repaired. Electrical cables were internally routed and a jarrah wedge was installed for the sail track to grip into. Jonathan has done incredible work on the mast, including beautiful varnishing with Awlwood, setting Minerva up for her next chapter.
All main mast rigging was re-done by Brierley Marine and installed by Matt Morris and Kerrawyn!
Two terminal cracks were discovered in the bowsprit and Minerva now sports a beautifully varnished bowsprit from a Derwent Class, complete with new bronze and copper fittings.
Once all of this work was done, Minerva's decks, cabin and cockpit were all taken back and repainted. New anti-slip surfaces were applied at the end of 21.
Some of the bright work (where showing wear) was taken back to the timber and varnishing has restarted. 3 coats are on now, with more to be applied.
Minerva has a characterful and cosy interior. It's light and bright, with enough timber work for that traditional feel. The interior is in beautiful condition, with 65 years of patina intentionally kept.
She has a great little galley, with plenty of bench and cupboard space and has a great little gas cooker. Minerva also comes with a 2 year old Dometic 12/24 volt refrigerator, in great condition.
The saloon can be configured traditionally with two berths, or as a double (I will supply the double base). She has a quarter berth and the forpeak could be reconfigured as a v-berth.
Minerva is very well set up with everything you'll need on-board for a fantastic Channel and coastal cruiser, and while there too many items to mention here, it's worth noting her full suite of sails, all in very good to excellent condition, along with two new sail covers (main and mizzen) made by Storm Bay Sails over the past two years.

**Nb. Having just been re-rigged, a little more needs to be completed. The Plastimo furler needs one more section to complete its assembly. Boots for the main and mizzen are being made by SBS. The safety lines need to be reinstalled. The main mast vang needs to be reinstalled. These tasks will be complete
