H28 'Marloo' 1946

This historic Herreshoff 28 ketch is now reluctantly offered for sale.

A handwritten letter from L Francis Herreshoff dated 1946 confirms that 'Marloo' was indeed the first H28 launched and sailing. The longevity of this vessel is without doubt due to the quality of build materials, design and skilled craftsmanship in construction.
The Herreshoff bible "Sensible Cruising Designs" details the philosophy behind the H28 and this particular craft exemplifies all the L Francis attributes for a smart and capable daysailer. The fact that many H28's have circumnavigated the globes bears testament that this design is somewhat more than that.

'Marloo' was built to plan by John Dingle in Brighton and launched in 1946. She was sailed competitively from Royal Brighton YC with America's Cup skipper Jock Sturrock crewing. Jock was so enamoured by the boat that he had Savages in Williamstown build one for him. 'Marloo' came to the Gippsland Lakes in the early 1950's and has had a succession of owners, and extended trips offshore as far north as the Whitsundays.
This capable little craft has been under the stewardship of a wooden boat enthusiast for the past 16 years and has undergone major restoration works which were outlined in a Cruising Helmsman article which can be found following the link to Articles at www. Fhboats. Com. Au

We now hope to find a buyer who has the yacht's best interest at heart. Someone who will take over the stewardship and reap the reward of the enormous effort that has gone into her restoration and maintenance over many years to bring her up to her present excellent condition. That someone will be a sailor who appreciates simplicity, style and seaworthiness.
