When it comes to designing stout blue water cruising yachts, there are no bigger names in the industry than naval architect Bob Perry. The Tayana 37 is one of Perry's most successful designs with well over 600 built to date, and you can still order a new one from the factory.

Amongst the international cruising community, the Tayana 37 needs no introduction. Reportedly there are more Tayana 37's out there wandering the globe than any other design of sailboat. So, it is no wonder that over the years Tayana has amassed a huge global following and that has resulted in a very large and active Tayana Owners Association. This has grown into a huge and valuable source of information for owners all around the world.

The huge success of the design lies in the hull form, full length keel and heavy displacement. These attributes give the Tayana 37 a very sea-kindly motion and a ride that modern production boat owners can only dream about! The T37 is no slouch either, her efficient cutter rig carries a generous amount of sail area making her a capable performer even in lighter breezes.

Penzance was the first Tayana 37 imported into Australia. She was used as a display boat at the 1983 Sydney boat show before being delivered to her new owner.

The interior of Penzance is absolutely stunning. The craftsmanship and attention to detail in the interior fit out has to seen to be fully appreciated. There is an abundance of solid Burmese teak that gives the interior a rich warm feeling. With solid brass portholes and ships bell, an oil lamp and a butterfly hatch, she is oozing with charm and character from a bygone area.

Accommodation is well catered for with a forward double cabin, aft quarter berth and a cleverly designed sofa on the starboard side that converts to a double bed. Storage is exceptional for a yacht of this size with a multitude of large draws and wardrobes.

The U-shaped galley has been thoughtfully designed and has good bracing on either tack for cooking while underway. Features include nice deep stainless steel sinks, a two burner gas stove with oven, under-bench refrigeration and practical storage on all sides.

Penzance is a very well setup cruising boat. She has been regularly updated and has a modern, state of the art electronics installation. All components are NMEA 2000 and communicate with each other via a Maretron backbone. She has an ultrasonic wind sensor (no moving parts) and weather station, that plots barometric pressure on a graph, temp, dew point etc. A GPS receiver with a built in heading sensor delivers the necessary data to accurately display ground wind, true wind and apparent wind. The Icom M506 VHF radio features a built in AIS and sends all data through the network all to the Raymarine chartplotter on the helm. Both units feature a proximity alarm to alert of any potential collisions.

Self steering is well catered for with a durable Fleming wind vane and a Raymarine St4000 wheel pilot. There are 3 solar panels for battery charging and the New Yanmar engine (2013) has a 125Amp alternator to supplement charging.

In 2015 Penzance had a major refit that cost over $35,000 and included the following brand NEW equipment: Yanmar 3YM30 diesel motor, Yanmar gearbox, SS Propshaft and flexible coupling, Doyle mainsail, Doyle Staysail, Chain plates including grinding out and rebuilding all of the fiberglass knees, Electric pressure water pump and manual foot pump, house battery bank, Raymarine E7D Chartplotter, fish finder and sounder, Maretron DSM 150 multifunction display, Maretron WSO 100 weather station with Ultrasonic wind sensor, Maretron NMEA 2000 backbone network with Actisense network hub, Icom M506 VHF radio with DSC and AIS, Lowrance GPS receiver with heading sensor, Fleeming Global Equipe wind vane, Sony Bluetooth stereo, EPIRB ACR 406 GPS enabled, Powertech solar charge regulator and monitor, Completely new Bow Sprit, Cockpit cushions, Offshore flare kit, Jack lines, All of the Circuit breakers and 50% of the wiring replaced, Windlass motor reversing solenoid and foot switch (2016). New Doyle headsail (2018) and a new dodger (2019).

Penzance is a very well equipped and capable blue water cruising yacht with an impressive inventory of modern electronics. She has undergone a considerable refit over the years and all that is left to do is some cosmetic work to restore her to her former glory. Cosmetic work aside, Penzance is ready to sail over the horizon into the sunset tomorrow.
