Reluctantly 'For Sale' my 16ft 'Winkle Brig' - 'RUWACH". A classic open day boat. As far as I know the only one in Australia.
For more history and information on these lovely little classic trailer-sailors - check out webpage - www. Winklebrig. Org
You will see my boat in the gallery #39.
These lovely little boats were modelled on a 19th Century Thames Estuary (UK) shell fishing boat/tenders to the larger fishing and naval fleets. Originally produced as a twin berth pocket cruiser I believe RUWACH was one of the first open day boats comissioned by my father because of his love for sea fishing - more room for his crab pots...
Basic description:
o 16ft (on deck) open day boat with 4ft detachable bowsprit - LOA 20ft.
o Tan gaff rigged main and jib on roller reefer
o Galvanised and registered 'Roller Coaster' (original English) trailer with modified with running gear - Australian standard HD axle, springs, breaks and bearings 13" wheels and spare wheel. Trailer is registered to 20/01/23.
o Hull is hand laid fiberglass with glassed in ballast and foam filled buoyancy compartments to create stability and positive buoyancy.
o Extensive hardwood trim and fit out
o Spruce (clear European pine) mast and spas
o Currently fitted with a low hours Honda 10hp 4 stoke outboard mounted in a well forward of the transom.
Motor has battery charger and electric start and easily accessible controls, with 10 or 20 lt fuel tank and fuel line.
o Inventory includes - covers, compass, depth sounder, anchor and rope, oars, assorted lines, some safety gear and LED nav lights
N. B. The weighted centre board retracts beneith the floor allowing for shallow draft when not sailing. Perfect for 'gunkholing'...
If you are seriously interested in this boat I am happy to email you a more complete history, inventory and more detailed photos and descriptions.
This little boat turns heads whoever she goes - even before you launch her!
'All the romance of a classic timber boat - without the maintenance'.
She can be towed, launched/retrieved and sailed single handed (I have on multiple occasions) - though a crew is helpful for rigging and launch/retrieve and more fun to enjoy time on the water with.
She is a very firm and forgiving boat under sail but is no slouch in a good stiff breeze. I have clocked her at 6+ knots (over ground) on occasion. The Honda outboard is quiet and economical.
Reason for sale: I inherited this boat from my father (who had it professionally built in the early 80's by Eric Bergqvist - Ferry Boat Yard, UK) and about 17 years ago it was shipped out from England.
My family circumstances (bereavement) have changed and I have not recently been getting the use from her that she deserves. It is time for someone else to care for and enjoy her.
In honour of my father, and as a legacy, I have decided to donate 50% of the sale price to the South Passage Foundation (Sail Training Qld) to support disadvantaged youth experience the joy of sailing.
I am happy to arrange (with adequate notice) a 'sea-trial' on the Tweed River for serious buyers.
RUWACH is located at Palm Beach, Queensland.
