The Open 402 is the flagship, and it behaves like one. At 12.29 metres with a 3.96-metre beam and 23 degrees of transom deadrise, this is a genuine bluewater platform rated to 1,700 horsepower, which is quad-engine territory, with the fuel capacity to use it. Sportsman describe it as the pinnacle of the range, and the specification sheet backs the claim rather than decorating it.

What separates the 402 from every other boat in the series is that it is liveable. The console opens into a full cabin with a convertible queen berth, a galley with microwave, cooktop and refrigerator on Corian benchtops, a private enclosed shower behind a glass door, a porcelain head with overboard discharge and hot water, a 32-inch television and air conditioning throughout. There is a separate 95-litre diesel tank for the genset. You can leave the ramp on Friday and not think about coming back.

On deck it is still unmistakably a fishing boat. Rear-facing mezzanine seating, unique in the Sportsman range, sits above twin pressurised 151-litre aquarium livewells at the transom, with flip-down tackle compartments built into the mezzanine face and 279-litre in-deck fish boxes underfoot. Forward, an electrically actuated sun deck moves through three positions between dining table, lounge and open casting deck. A Vetus bow thruster and a windlass with 90 metres of rope make a boat this size manageable shorthanded.

The helm is a blacked-out command centre running twin Garmin GPSMAP 9227 displays, SeaStar Interact digital switching and Yamaha Command Link Plus, behind a seamless panoramic windscreen with an integrated wiper. Seakeeper Ride VACS trims out up to 70 per cent of underway pitch and roll. Backed by Sportsman's 10-year limited hull warranty.
