The Farr 9.2 was designed by renowned naval architect Bruce Farr.
The brilliance in this rare lift keel model is she can cruise at 1.6m Keel depth, race at 2.1m and nudge the beach at 0.6m (0.4m) with a full tilt transom hung rudder.
Inspecting the keel box puts any concerns about safety aside. You can use the 25mm stainless bolt pin to fix the keel at two depths. The walls are substantial to the point of being highly structural and robust. The keel box is dry to the cabin when properly sealed by the o-ring seals and backed up with water tight inspection ports.
Upwind performance and stability were improved over the fixed keel Farr 9.2 with a similar ballast weight and longer lever arm ratio. The keel box allows the power winch to lift the keel while maintaining lateral resistance for and aft, meaning the helm is not affected by keel depth. With a good suite of sails, the Farr 9.2 can easily hold its own around the buoys against popular designs.
Shiraz (Rough Red) was professionally built by Hitech yachts in Henderson, WA. The hull is a Derakane fibreglass woven mat composite. This construction creates a very stiff, strong and durable superstructure. Hitech yachts had a great reputation for their sophisticated approach to boat building. Every yacht was built to comply with the American Bureau of Shipping Standards. They utilized some of the best materials available including Derakane vinyl-ester on the exterior of the hulls. The Derakane Hitek 9.2 has a reputation as never having hull osmosis.
As a club racer she is fast and won fastest boat in division in her first season with last owner.
If your plans are to spend weekends at Rottnest and do some coastal cruising, then there is plenty of amenity in place with 4x125 AH AGM battery house bank, 1100 watt of solar, charging 240v.
Still used regularly and happy to take anyone out for a sail.
