Picaroon -- A Classic Wooden Motor-Sailer Seeking a New Custodian

Our charming wooden motor-sailer, Picaroon, is seeking a new owner who appreciates traditional boats and would relish the opportunity to undertake a rewarding, hands-on restoration project.

Picaroon has been part of our lives since 1975 and was lovingly maintained and enjoyed for many decades. In more recent years, however, my advancing age and reduced capacity to undertake the necessary maintenance have meant that her upkeep has inevitably declined.

Designed by renowned US naval architect S. S. Rabl, Picaroon is a classic, sea-kindly vessel with strong bones, timeless character and considerable potential. She will appeal to someone who appreciates the craftsmanship and character of traditional wooden boats and would enjoy restoring a much-loved vessel to her former glory.

Built on the Gold Coast, Picaroon has enjoyed an extensive cruising life. Her adventures have included Moreton Bay, Stradbroke Island and Southport, followed by years exploring Pittwater, Broken Bay, the Hawkesbury River and Brisbane Waters. After coming to Perth in the 1980s, she continued cruising the Swan River, with several voyages to Rottnest Island and Carnac Island.

At 5.5 metres (18 ft), Picaroon has classic lines and a solid stripped-plank timber hull. For a vessel of her size, she has proved a remarkably capable and comfortable coastal cruiser.

This is a genuine restoration opportunity rather than a boat ready to launch and go cruising. The hull remains in good condition for her age and has been continuously kept afloat. The plywood deck and cabin top, however, have developed several soft areas and require restoration.

The 6 hp Yanmar PMX 6 diesel engine is currently not running. The cylinder head has been removed for reconditioning, with all removed components carefully boxed and included with the boat.

Picaroon is not trailerable and will require a suitable mooring or pen. She is currently registered until February 2027.

For the right person, Picaroon offers something increasingly difficult to find: a genuine classic wooden boat of manageable size with an interesting history, proven cruising experience and plenty of scope for hands-on restoration.
