Fibreglass/GRP GRP Hull, SCRIMP (Resin Infusion Molding Process) Balsa Core Deck.

Hemisphere Explorer was built by Cecil M. Lange & Sons, custom boat builders at Port Townsend, WA, USA before being shipped east to Maine for outfitting by the renowned Hinckley Yachts yard.

As was common with Deerfoot designs, the hulls are GRP and decks are built with Balsa core, except where hardware is located. In these areas where there may be winches, the windlass or deck cleats, the balsa is replaced by resin for strength. This yacht was built using the SCRIMP (Seamans Composites Resin Infusion
Molding Process) which provides a more uniform and measured distribution of resin within the fiberglass laminates and Balsa core than hand lay-up methods. The hull was laminated with vinylester resin for increased protection against osmosis.

Hemisphere Explorer follows the Deerfoot concept of relatively narrow, light displacement, long waterline, nearly plumb-stemmed hull shape. The hull is a round bilge design with a moderately deep, bulbed fin-keel, a balanced spade rudder, a slightly raked bow, and a reverse-transom stern fitted with a swim step and two watertight doors accessing a single watertight stern compartment.

The designer, Steve Dashew's concept was a vessel able to undertake long ocean passages at a good speed, certainly approaching the 200nm/day figures, while also being strong, seaworthy, and capable of being handled easily by a couple, or single handed, as by the present owner.

Mast / Rigging
Mast
The Mast was struck in March 2022, professionally repainted by Andrew Woodforth marine and all standing rigging was replaced with Dyform 316 stainless steel by Rope solutions.
Manufacturer Sparcraft (Wicard Pacific)
Type Keel Stepped
Height above deck 19.5m
Configuration One piece tapered anodized extrusion. Double Spreader.

The mast was manufactured from a single aluminum extrusion and then anodized before being painted by an electrostatic powder coated process which provides for greater quality of finish and durability through life.

The mast extrusion is a structural aluminum alloy that offers excellent mechanical features (65Nmm (38.4ksi) at breaking point and 235 Nmm2 (34ksi) at elastic limit. Tapered along much of its length, the mast combines good driving force and elegant appearance.

There are also additional stiffening sections inside the mast extending from the base to about the first set of spreaders (evident from the rivet positions on the outside of the mast). This gives added strength and stiffness lower down, allowing the top part to move as designed while sailing.

There are two sets of spreaders. Both were strengthened in May 2020 with new material being added at the mast end of the spreader, effectively adding a reinforcing sleeve in the area. The spreaders were then painted. The spreader is now stronger than before.
Masthead cutter.

SEACOCKS AND THROUGH HULLS
As with most Dashew designed yachts, there is an effort to minimize the number of through-hulls to reduce the likelihood of water ingress. There is no salt water "in" for the galley sink, the head sink, or for flushing the toilet as they all use freshwater from the boat's freshwater system.

There are five (5) through-hulls with seacocks below the waterline:
Engine and generator: 2 x austenitic stainless-steel marine castings. Non-magnetic stainless-steel alloy castings (CF8M valves). Corrosion resistant. Removed and reconditioned in 2018.

Watermaker "in": 1 x Forespar Marelon through hull and ball valve seacock (under companion way steps).

Refrigeration cooling pumps "in": 1 x 'Trudesign' through hull and ball valve seacock. Located in machinery space in front of the start-battery box. New 2018.

Overboard brine discharges for the watermaker: the seacock is located on port side of machinery space under shelf.

Overboard discharge for the exhaust water from the generator: the seacock is located on the port side of machinery space under shelf.

The Marelon and Trudesign units are constructed of a GRP and nylon composite polymer which is immune to corrosion and electrolysis and gives a long service life. No maintenance required.

Toilet. The overboard discharge for the toilet is located port side of hull under transom area with a Y-valve above the waterline in the lazarette locker on port side of stern anchor locker. The Y-Valve was replaced in June 2020 with a new Trudesign unit, and new sanitation hosing was also fitted. There is no seacock.
