In working with Gino Morrelli on Avalanche's customization, he surprised me by adding two additional feet onto the back of the 50 foot design for the HH 52! The extra two feet cut down on pitching in waves and made her much faster.
Carbon fiber construction produces a strong, very light, extremely rigid platform for safe, fast, fun and very efficient sailing. Designed with short-handed sailing in mind, the deck layout on the HH50 has been carefully configured for ease of sailing. Though simple to sail the HH50 is far from subdued. "Raceboat in disguise" technology abounds, and equal-to-wind-speed performance is the norm.
This performance is matched with a spacious, open above decks layout, providing the perfect environment in which to live, relax and entertain. Meantime, below deck you'll find luxurious cabins, beautifully illuminated by large windows. To port, a master cabin which occupies the full hull, providing substantial living space and storage, with a spacious head and separate shower. While to starboard one finds two comfortable guest suites, with generous heads and separate shower.
The result? A truly impressive liveaboard cruising platform!
I completed a circumnavigation in 2019 on a Trimaran and then built this new catamaran "Avalanche" to circumnavigate the world again, currently lying in Noumea New Caledonia.
I took delivery of my HH 50/52 in Los Angeles and sailed her for two years to Mexico, Hawaii, Marqesas, Society, Tuamotus, Cooks, Fiji, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia. It was an epic adventure. Avalanche is an epic yacht!
Avalanche's best point of sail is a broad reach flying main and screacher sails. During our passage from Mexico to Hawaii our top speed was 30 knots at about 135 degrees off apparent wind. Our average speed during the passage was 21 knots. Up wind and close hauled she can exceed wind speed at 35 degrees off of apparent wind.
Because of her lifting foils and reverse plum bows, she sails comfortably flat and with her sails close to perpendicular to the water with full lift and her piercing hulls cutting through momentum killing waves instead of pitching, she's very fast and comfortable.
Avalanche routinely hits 500 miles a day with good wind velocity and point of sail. So in reliable trade wind conditions, I can plan on 500 miles per day. In passages that cross areas like the hot and windless doldrums we motored at cruise speed of 9 knots, turned on the air conditioning, and watched big screen movies! I like passages but I don't want to spend my life out at sea! With zero wind she can cruise 216 + miles per day.
