Schionning 1520 one-off Growler launched in 2010 but very little use. Beautifully built with western red cedar core laid with a horizontal grain and sheathed in 9oz kevlar below the waterline and 5oz above on the interior of the hulls and double-bias glass on the exterior. The semi-monocoque construction using an X beam configuration has resulted in an extremely strong/rigid boat, avoiding the problems associated with front beams flexing and/or shipping water. Cabin and cockpit floor is 25mm thick Duflex panels.
The design was initially for single-handed ocean racing but adapted during the building stage (cabin slightly raised) for two people with a small child to live aboard. The boat was built by highly respected multihull sailor and craftsman Glenn Rossiter. Interior room is sparse but there are bunks for up to six people (we have slept 10 but never again}. Head room is minimal but there is huge space on this boat for equipment and gear. Even weighed down (and we did) she still laps up sea miles and retains a Bruce nos of 1.5 and above at her heaviest. One of the pictures shows her first sea trials clocking well over 20 knots, before the screecher was added and with props in the water. The design Bruce nos was above 1.8. Two of the new lighter weight (70kg) 25 hp Yamahas were built into pods in 2022 and they can be electronically tilted out of the water reducing drag. The boat will be on the hard at Redland City marina south-east of Brisbane for anti-fouling and rig inspection in late April/May.
