With its stunning traditional aesthetics, impressive pedigree, and true Bluewater capability, "Achernar II" is a vessel that turns heads where ever it pulls into port. This vessel is number 12 of the 15 famous Alden 'Malabar' designs which were all designed by, built for, owned and raced by the legendary John G Alden. Strongly built using NZ Kauri on Spotted Gum frames in Sydney shortly after World War II, it quickly earned its reputation for exceptional sailing performance, and went on to win the famous Bermuda race on 3 occasions. Following this it was cruised extensively around South East Australia under various fastidious owners who maintained the vessel to a high standard. A major refit was undertaken in 2009/2010 including a quality refurbishment of the interior, refurbishment of the masts, booms, and new standing rigging, plus the addition of a full new set of sails. Whilst this vessel does now require work in some areas, it presents a rare opportunity to enjoy a vessel of this calibre, with plenty of scope to add value. With the versatility to be utilised for anything from family cruising, Bluewater adventures, or even as a comfortable liveaboard, this is an opportunity not to miss!
Stepping inside, the impressive pilothouse provides panoramic visibility and plenty of natural light. The traditional timber fitout is paired with classic cream upholstery and white finishes creating a warm and welcoming ambience. Ideal for Tasmanian conditions, or Bluewater sailing, this is an excellent area to keep watch, and makes the vessel a joy to sail in any climate. Just a few easy steps down leads to the spacious saloon. To starboard is the generous folding leaf dinette, with seating for 8 in comfort on the neatly upholstered settees. Forward is the well appointed galley. Well set up for easily preparing meals at sea, it is equipped with a 2 burner gas stove with grill, upright fridge, microwave, stainless steel sink with H/C water, and plenty of storage for extended stays onboard. The accommodation is good for cruising with family and friends. Forward is the private master cabin, complete with large double v-berth, and excellent storage. The saloon as two single settee berths, plus a pilot berth on the port side. The two settees in the pilothouse make ideal berths for younger members of the family. The package is complete with a private bathroom with electric toilet with holding tank, H/C shower, and vanity.
Outside, the classic charm of the vessel is immediately evident. The vessel is well set up to be easily managed shorthanded with the roller furling main, furling headsail, and autopilot. The versatile ketch rig provides plenty of options as the wind increases, and the vessel's sailing performance is sure to impress even the most discerning sailor. There is easy access around the wide side decks, and the high bulwarks provide good security. Forward is an electric anchor winch for easy anchoring.
This vessel is powered by a Ford Lees diesel engine which was reconditioned in 2007. Paired with a Hydralign feathering prop, it provides easy cruising at 5 knots. It is also easily accessed below the pilothouse sole for hassel free servicing.
Having recently benefited from NEW 2024 4 X 120AH BATTERIES, and being equipped with a 150W solar panel with new regulator, good electronics, a Magma BBQ, inflatable tender, and up to date safety equipment, the vessel has everything you need to get started. Don't miss this opportunity to turn your sailing dreams into reality! For more information please call Jo Breen on or John Radonic on .
