The Clipper 21 features a long, thin, retractable swing keel primarily to provide a balance between deep-water sailing performance and shallow-water versatility/trailering. Designed by William Crealock in 1971, this 20.87 ft (6.36 m) trailer-sailer allows the keel to be retracted from a maximum draft of 4.33 ft (1.32 m) to just 0.54 ft (0.16 m).
Key reasons for this specific, long, thin keel design include:
Shallow Draft and Beaching: When fully retracted, the shallow draft allows the boat to be easily launched from a trailer, maneuver in shallow rivers, and even beach.
Performance Upwind: The long, thin, high-aspect-ratio design allows the keel to function effectively as a wing, minimizing leeway (sideways drift) and improving performance when sailing upwind.
Performance Tracking: The long, slender shape provides good directional stability, making the boat track well.
Stability and Weight: The keel carries roughly 410 lb (186 kg) of cast iron ballast. While it is a lighter keel compared to a fixed-keel cruiser, it provides necessary righting moment when extended.
Safety Feature: The swing keel is designed to pivot up if it hits a submerged object, reducing the risk of damage.
The Clipper 21 is a lightweight, 1,800 lb (816 kg) design that relies on this retractable, high-performance fin to allow it to be both a trailerable boat and a competitive, fast cruiser.
Key reasons for the flat hull design include:
Shallow Draft and Trailerability: The flat bottom allows for a shallow draft, making it easier to launch from a trailer and navigate shallow waters.
Increased Initial Stability: The wide, flat hull provides high initial stability in calm waters.
Interior Volume: The design increases the usable interior space for a boat of its size, creating a more comfortable cabin.
Performance Characteristics: While not ideal for choppy, rough water, the design is efficient for sailing in calmer conditions and can be quite fast on the wind.
The boat is considered a good, easy-to-sail, and budget-friendly starter vessel, although its design makes it more suitable for lakes, bays, and calmer waters rather than heavy ocean conditions.
