Designed by NZ designer Paul Whiting, and craftsman built by AJ Porter Marine at Whangaparoa on NZ's Hibiscus Coast in 1985. Sailaway was the second Paul Whiting 40 Alan Porter built. He liked the first one so much he decided to build one for himself and had her for about six years. After selling her, the new owner sailed her around the Pacific for a number of years and then eventually to Australia where she was again sold. We bought her in 2012 at Pittwater, and engaged Joe Walsh Rigging to renew the standing and running rigging, including complete refurbishment of the mast and replacing chainplates.
In 2016 we treated her to a major overhaul that was done by Colin Beashel of Colin Beashel Marine on Pittwater.
All deck fittings were removed, mast, windows, hatches, winches, targa, stanchions, steering pedestal, tow rails, rubbing strips, everything (photos available to serious buyers). The teak decks were replaced with ply and fibreglassed. Hatches in the cockpit were rebuilt new. The Armorglass windows with alloy frames were refurbished. Hatches in the deck and coach house were refurbished and new ones purchased where required. A completely new rudder and rudder stock was fabricated and fitted. A new fuel tank and water tank, both with inspection hatches, were fabricated and securely fitted. The keel join was exposed, checked and re-glassed. The 7 large 25mm bronze keel bolts were re-tensioned.
The standing rigging, mast and boom were checked thoroughly while it was out and was again professionally inspected in 2018 before we took off up North. She was professionally painted with Awlgrip and then all fittings, hatches windows etc were sealed and re-installed. Sailaway was re-launched in Jan 2017 after five months in Colin Beashel's shed.
Sailaway is a beautiful boat (a work of art) and fun to sail. She handles all conditions without vices. The engine is getting old but is reliable and does not leak oil but is showing some smoke mostly until warmed up. The dripless seal is old but doen't leak. The rigging is also old (Oct 2012) but is still accepted by Nautilus Insurance (a rig check will be required by Sep next year).
We lived on her for five years 2018-23 while sailing the east coast of Australia and have owned her for over 13 years.
