Steve Dashew designed Deerfoot. The Dashew concept was a vessel able to undertake long ocean passages at a good speed, certainly approaching the 200nm/day figures, while also being strong, seaworthy, and capable of handling easily by a couple.

Those that know the Deerfoot will know their reputation for outstanding performance as proven world cruiser, this is a serious boat for people who want a vessel that is capable of serious, long term and long distance cruising.

Avalon follows the Deerfoot concept of relatively narrow, light displacement, long waterline, nearly plumb-stemmed hull shape. The hull is a round bilge design with a moderately deep, bulbed fin-keel, a balanced spade rudder, a slightly raked bow, and a reverse-transom stern fitted with a swim step and two watertight doors accessing a single watertight stern compartment.

CONSTRUCTION
Hemisphere Explorer was built by Cecil M. Lange & Sons, custom boat builders at Port Townsend, WA, USA before being shipped east to Maine for outfitting by Hinckley Yachts.

As was common with Deerfoot designs the hulls and decks are built with Balsa core both above and below the waterline, except where hardware is located. In these areas where there may be winches, the windlass or deck cleats, the balsa is replaced by resin and high strength
