Quetzal is a renowned Peter Cole-designed Nantucket 31 masthead sloop with a rich Australian racing history. Commissioned by Lyle North in 1977 and crafted by renowned Tasmanian builder Jock Muir, this vessel features a unique cold-moulded hull of diagonally laid Western Red Cedar, dynal-sheathed and finished with a two-pack polyurethane coating. As one of only three prototypes built for the Admiral's Cup, it boasts a 55% ballast ratio and an antimonial lead bolted keel.
With a LOA of 9.5 meters, a beam of 3.2 meters, and a draft of 1.78 meters, Quetzal is versatile for various waters. Powered by a regularly maintained Bukh DV 24 HP engine with a V-drive folding two-bladed propeller, it cruises comfortably at 6 knots. The recent rewire, new batteries, and servicing ensure it's ready to sail.
The interior offers quality furnishings, seating for six, a two-burner stove with an oven, and twin stainless sinks. It includes approximately 70-litre dual fuel and water tanks. Electronics feature a Raymarine multifunction display with wind direction and internal repeaters, and new 80-amp batteries as of April 2023.
Standing rigging, serviced last year, includes Hood custom spars and a hydraulic backstay. The furling head sail on a twin Gemini track is complemented by 6 Barlow winches and additional sails, including a new 2022 Dacron furling genoa and mainsail. Accessories include a 12-month-old Zodiac inflatable dinghy with an outboard, and an MSB mooring in Lane Cove River, Sydney, at no extra cost.
Quetzal's maritime history and ease of maintenance make it an exceptional value, offered at a price akin to a shared vessel. It's a unique opportunity for someone to continue the legacy of joy this boat has brought to its previous owners.
