ETAP 46 DS | 2006 - Carefully Enhanced, Exceptionally Equipped and Maintained

The ETAP 46 DS is a distinctive Belgian-built deck saloon yacht, known for combining comfortable long-distance cruising with good sailing performance and generous panoramic visibility from the saloon. The model was built from the mid-2000s and is often noted for ETAP's high-quality construction and "unsinkable" design philosophy.

ATARAXIA is an ETAP 46 DS built in 2006 for her first owner, an experienced Dutch yachtsman. In 2011, the first owner upgraded the rig and rudder to improve sailing performance, including a new 1 metre taller Selden mast with a traditional mainsail setup, and a naval architect-designed deeper rudder. The generator was also upgraded to a 5 kVA Northern Lights unit, and a second diesel tank was installed in the lazarette to increase motoring range.

2020 / 2021 Major Refit
ATARAXIA was sold in late 2019 to her current owners while berthed in Spain. During the Covid period, they carried out a major refit to prepare the boat for transatlantic ocean cruising.
The 2020/2021 refit included:
o Hull stripped and Coppercoat applied.
o New arch for solar panels.
o New B&G electronics suite, including two plotters, radar and GPS.
o New all-Victron electrical system with 800Ah Lithium batteries, Quattro and GX.
o New induction cooktop and oven, with the gas system removed.
o New windlass and 100 metres of 10 mm anchor chain.
o New canvas
o New curtains and mattresses.

ARC Preparation and added Safety equipment
In 2021, ATARAXIA was equipped to participate in the ARC in January 2022. This included:
o New life raft
o New Inmarsat satellite phone
o New Spinlock Deckvest lifejackets with integrated AIS MOB
o New fire extinguishers and Automatic fire-extinguishing systems in the engine and electrical compartments
o Other safety equipment required for ARC compliance.
o Highfield 310 tender
o Vulcan 30 kg

Engine and Mechanical Maintenance
The main Yanmar engine has approximately 2,400 hours, with a engine panel installed in 2022.
Engine maintenance and upgrades include:
o Major Yanmar service in Spain in 2020, including turbo cleaning.
o Routine maintenance carried out according to the Yanmar manual.
o New stainless-steel exhaust elbow, and engine mounts replaced in Grenada in 2023.
o New Balmar high-output alternator and regulator installed in 2023.
o Major service in 2025 before the Pacific crossing to Tahiti, including injector removal and testing.

Keel
In 2022, the keel was rebedded as preventative maintenance. There were no known issues with the keel bolts or structure, but the keel was removed and inspected to confirm that everything was sound.
Recent Equipment and Upgrades After ARC Preparation
Following the ARC preparation, ATARAXIA continued to receive upgrades and preventative maintenance, including:
o Standing rigging replaced in Grenada in 2023.
o Solar panels upgraded to 720 watts of Victron panels in 2023.
o New mainsail and genoa ordered from Precision Sails in 2023/2024.
o Running rigging replaced at various times and now essentially new.
o VHF replaced with a new Icom unit in 2025.
o Victron Quattro and GX replaced in 2025 with latest models for the Pacific crossing.
o Coppercoat redone in 2026.

Overall, ATARAXIA stands well apart from a standard ETAP 46 DS. She has benefited from professional service and maintenance under the current ownership, with continuous attention given to keeping her reliable, well equipped and ready to sail. Recent standing rigging, updated sails and extra sail area and deeper rudder, Hydrovane self-steering, a lithium/Victron power system, solar arch, and a recent ground tackle and tender package all add considerably to her bluewater cruising capability. She is available for viewing, and a detailed inventory can be downloaded for further information.
