Tasmanian One Design "Vanity". Gaff-rigged, huon pine-hulled, classic racing cutter. She was one of 6 identical yachts built as the first one design class in Australia, in 1910-11. She has an extensive racing pedigree, having won the RYCT Dewar Shield on several occasions. Vanity was completely restored from a derelict state by Deagon Slipways in Brisbane, at a cost of over $200,000 in 2005-10, including all new ribs, deck and cabin and new gaff rig. She returned to Hobart in time for her 100th birthday in 2011. Due to her owner finally admitting he is not as mobile as he used to be, she is for sale.
She is carvel-planked Huon pine over all new (2008) spotted gum ribs. The cabin sides and coaming are Huon pine, with white beech deck and cabin top over new spotted gum beams.
The spars are clear Oregon. She is rigged as a gaff cutter, and as the staysail is club-footed with central sheeting, only the jib needs to be tended when tacking, so she can be sailed to windward single handed in a pinch. The running backstays are more of a challenge of the wind, but she can be comfortably cruised with a crew of two and raced with a crew of 3.
Although outclassed by modern yachts to windward, she takes off in anything broader than a close reach. And is a pleasure to sail in twilight races and day cruises.
She is in need of a new motor as her current electric motor is not supported by the manufacturer, and she would benefit from a modern, plug-and-play motor like a Vetus E-Line, or a diesel if that is your preference. The standing rigging is more than 5 years old so will need replacing to get insurance, and it was seriously over-engineered so could do with lighter rigging anyway.
Some rot repair work is required to the cabin top and hatch, and a new cabin sole is needed as the plywood substrate for the white beech sole has delaminated.
She has never had any bunk cushions, so you can fit her out according to your taste and comfort requirements.
