MEROPS. A purpose built High Latitude sailing registered ship made of Corten Steel. A passion project by the original owner Michael Foley alongside Halvorsen's own Horst Diegnamm has created a one-off, unique and innovative sailing boat. Eccentric and ruggedly beautiful. This takes the Freya reputation for a fast and stable hull (the original Freya 39 won the Sydney to Hobart consecutively 3 times) and takes it up a notch for durability and the ability to take it into remote places, and all weather and seas. If you want to feel SAFE and seakindly, this is the boat for you.

This is the second owner. Unfortunately it has now become a Deceased Estate. As the partner of the late Louis Tillett, I am able to help with a handover, as we sailed and lived on MEROPS for years. I am offering it as is, where is, including the rare (and valuable) mooring license and apparatus in the exclusive Hunters Hill district, with a beach, dinghy storage rack and various Marinas, a Ferry wharf, 24 hour unlimited parking, and other services nearby.

Read the specs sheet, and go to the website and associated Facebook page for the full story and more photos. See presentation link PDF on ad.

If you are looking for something safe for your family, or indeed to sail to the higher latitudes this boat is a "boys own adventure" and a joy for a small family or crew with its spacious environment and flush deck area designed for safety at sea always, and thoughtful design features including an open plan with strategic portholes to avoid seasickness, and handholds throughout, among many other built in, well thought out features. They just don't make boats like this anymore. Due to its Corten steel build (anti rust and high strength properties), it is a rare low maintenance, go anywhere vessel with so many built in redundancies as to make it worth every cent. It is setup for short handed sailing, but can be sailed solo, with already installed configuration and a couple of minor, inexpensive upgrades suggested for the new owner.

You're buying a "ship" not a toy, and it is an Australian Registered ship meaning it has 64 shares of Equity (if you want to have a syndicate ownership), with continuous providence of seaworthiness, giving the owner/s the ability to sail it (and sell it) overseas without any problems, given it's special status. Australian Ship Registration number ON85291. And yes, it's possible to turn it into a Commercial/Survey vessel with some minor upgrades.

I have attached the survey from 2017 as a PDF. But please NOTE that there are quite a few errors in it due to this being a post-sale survey from a Deceased Estate, so there was some guesswork involved initially. However the spec sheets here are accurate and up to date, including upgrades that have been undertaken since 2017 when we bought Merops.

Again, so many thoughtful built in features, too many to list here... So it's a must read to see the spec sheets on the Survey page of the website www. Halvorsenfreya. Com. Come and see why Jon Amtrup (who wrote the High Latitude Sailing book) and Bob Perry (famous designer of Double Enders such as the Baba and Panda) are both genuine fans of our MEROPS. Just two of our longtime Facebook folllowers, many of whom are boat builders, surveyors, commercial skippers and engineers who have fallen in love with this unique vessel.

Regardless of whether I contract a broker to sell this boat, I will continue to remain accessible throughout the selling and handover process (and beyond) on the number and email shown here on the advertisement. As at 4/2/2024 I am painting the decks and completing the last of the cleaning and emptying of the vessel. It will be ready for viewing again from Monday 12 February 2024. I have recently added some short videos to give you an idea of the downstairs accommodation. See them at my YouTube channel https://youtube. Com/@user-yv6nh6kq7q?si=i2SiilkYyNPI6G DK.

Remarks
A safe, low maintenance vessel with a Corten Steel hull that would cost over 250k to build nowadays. It is rust resistant and 40% stronger than mild steel. The boat has been built with various failsafe and simple systems to ensure that Remote Passage makers are never caught out.

Corten Steel - means no rust problems
It is 40% stronger than regular Mild Steel, and lighter, and employs the process of having a thin veneer of oxidization, such as Aluminium... That prevents rust

Ice Breaker (Crusher) Bow design

Custom Geared Anchor Winch with Power installed for adpating to a powered winch

All Stanchions/Granny Bars/Fittings custom made - hand engineered and welded to make them super strong for Antarctic Conditions

2 x Winches on the Mast - hand made by Malcolm Barlow in the 1960s especially for the Halvorsen brothers - and are from the ORIGINAL Freya (the 3 time Sydney to Hobart winner) - made from a Bronze/Aluminium Alloy to last forever. Magnus Halvorsen said they were the strongest winches he had ever seen, and never needed maintaining. These are referred to in the Maritim Museum. Only 6 were ever made. These are 2 of those 6.

Recessed Portholes Midships - can be opened for cross-ventilation

All Deck Hatches are 20mm Perspex, with Stainless Steel Housing.
Portholes and Companionway Doors are Armoured Glass

Oversized Dorade box for ventilation

No Condensation under all conditions

Insulated Hull

Handholds strategically placed everywhere

Rare Diesel Drip-wick Heater (Trawler style)

Custom Stainless Steel Detachable Chimney

Keel Cooling - reduces risk of salt water contamination or fouling through foreign objects such as plastic bags

Oversized Heavy Duty Custom Built Stainless Steel Sea Cocks

Recessed Steps (and Handholds) down to and under the waterline on Port and Starboard sides - to ensure one can ALWAYS get back on the boat. Very handy for alighting from or entering a Dinghy.
