"TERN" is a beautifully built classic timber Day Sailer, with the added advantage of an electric auxilliary shaft driven inboard motor. Recently exhibited at the Tasmanian Wooden Boat Festival, "TERN" has been greatly admired by many a classic boat enthusiast. Formerly named "Alibi" the build process has been documented in 2 editions of Australian Amateur Boatbuilder, and is testament to the skill and expertise of her 2 builders. A recent (2024) conversion to a 10Kw 48 volt electric motor, supplied by four 300 amp hour Lithium batteries, enables auxilliary motoring using a very small percentage of available power for when the wind fails, or for docking. Comes also with Mercury 3.3hp outboard with custom made demountable transom bracket. A fully galvanized professionally built and engineered registered road trailer and a 'A' frame demountable gantry for mast raising and lowering enables rigging, launching and retrieval wherever a public boat ramp can be located.
"TERN" is a true Classic in every sense. She is a great sailer, and at the same time reveals the beauty of a craftsman built timber boat for all to appreciate. Wherever she goes, heads are turned by her classic lines, and the beauty of the build. No amount of effort has been spared in the building of "TERN", nor in the design and installation of the electric motor.

Engine
10Kw 48 Volt Brushless DC Motor, Motenergy Inc, Wisconsin, USA. A Victron BMV 700 battery/engine monitoring system displays voltage, power being used, time remaining at that useage and amp hours remaining. Forward, neutral and reverse is engaged through a toggle switch, and power is applied via a throttle. Please note, the 10Kw motor, being the smallest available, is significantly 'overkill'. Approximately 2 to 3 Kw is quite sufficient to power "TERN" for 3 to 4 hours at cruising speed, making little demand on battery life. A 're gen' facility is built into the system for re charging the batteries by utilizing the free wheeling of the prop while under sail. A 50 volt battery charger suitable for Lithium batteries is included, requiring only a standard 10amp 3 pin connection.
