Zofia is a mature Sun Odyssey 42 DS. She was built in France in 2007, delivered to Australia and purchased from the importing agent in 2008. Now, when we say Zofia is a Sun Odyssey 42 DS, that does not actually come close to describing her. Yes, she has all the standard features that a Sun Odyssey of that generation. Even at her birth she was not standard, being equipped with a bow thruster, teak decking in the cockpit and in-mast furling. Since she joined our family she has been embellished.
These changes are numerous and in no particular order include:-
The addition of a beautifully crafted stainless steel dingy crane and solar arch. Seamlessly integrated into the original stern push pit. Strong and practical, it easily raises the 2.6 metre Highfield dinghy with 15 hp Yamaha two-stroke motor still attached.
A bow sprit, hand crafted out of beautifully engineered stainless steel which floats on the bow as if there by magic. Looks are deceiving however, as it is very securely attached to her bow to create an anchor point for the Code Zero - a must-use sail in light down wind airs. This addition has allowed the anchor roller to be moved forward, allowing for easy and safe deployment and retrieval of the anchor even when the Code Zero is attached.
Zofia is cutter rigged and dressed recently with new sails. Now two years old, these include a 150% headsail, a smaller and very functional staysail and a new tri-radial mainsail. Designed and built by Quantum Sails in Tasmania from 'cool grey' Contender CDX Cruising Laminate, these high spec tri-radial cut wind catchers are extremely functional and beautiful at the same time.
Zofia boasts a walk-through Mediterranean cockpit which is now covered, with what people tell us is the most functional and attractive cockpit protection they have ever seen. Our Trimmer is an absolute genius. The current covers are our third iteration and hence a culmination of years of experimentation. You'll get superb protection while passaging while retaining excellent view of the sails and remain in cool and dry comfort when entertaining other cruisers, whatever the weather. The addition of new cockpit cushions rounds off this most attractive feature of the Sun Odyssey 42 DS.
A Rainman 60 litre/hour, water maker along with a 2.00 kVa Honda generator extends Zofia's range and time she is able to remain offshore. 700 ah of 2yo AGM house batteries assisted by 400 watts of solar energy, efficiently controlled by her Victron solar charger, Zofia can passage for weeks at a time and thus to places of dreams. For instance, The Whitsundays, The Great Australian Bight, Port Davey and Bathurst Harbour (Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Areas), New Caledonia and Vanuatu. The stories she could tell you and other adventures..... But we digress. So what of her other additions?
Rope bags are incorporated into storm sheets near the twin helms, also in the cockpit for the halyards and misc ropes, on the mast for the spinnaker pole braces, and on the solar arch to tidy away the dinghy lifting lines. A 6 person life raft (not currently in service) is mounted in a dedicated stainless steel cradle on the coach deck and has it's own canvass cover. There is a kayak in a custom canvass bag that sits in a custom cradle on the coach deck too.
A stainless steel BBQ under it's own canvass cover is rail mounted on the stern and neatly plumbed into the house gas system and supported on a stainless steel prop concealing the hose.
A salt-water deck wash was added to deal with muddy anchors and a salt-water tap to the galley to help conserve water.
The Chart Plotter was relocated from the Nav station below and is mounted in a carbon fibre frame supported on a sturdy stainless steel stand in front of the main helm. The helms and winches are all covered by the way, in the same charcoal colour as the boot strip, sacrificial UV strip on the sails, antifoul and coving. Our girl is as colour-coordinated as Coco Channel!
An impressive 'spare parts inventory' and numerous tools and devices are included to provide protection, 'entertainment' and the ability to undertake the small jobs that come up from time to time.
Down below, Zofia is 'The Owners version' with full KING size bed in the stern cabin and has also undergone mature development. All the cabin lighting was changed to efficient touch-control, two-colour LED lighting. Her oven was replaced as recently as 2020. The gas sensor was upgraded in 2025 along with the complete refurbishment of the refrigerator with a new compressor and cooling plate installed. A Starllink connection has of course been added and converted to 12 volt. Zofia boasts a state-of-the-art AIS that is integrated into the standard Raymarine navigation equipment and can also be picked up by hand held devices. A 12 volt TV and Fusion sound system provide onboard entertainment while numerous LED strip-lighting additions enhance the comfort and ambience of the salon as well as visibility in the engine bay. To round it off, she has a little washing machine which, when connected to the shore water via a dedicated mains-water connection, provides the convenience of onboard washing.
Apart from these changes, Zofia has been meticulously maintained with almost annual lifts for antifoul and polishing. Her standing rigging was replaced in 2020 and while the mast was down we took the opportunity to have her below-waterline surfaces sand blasted. A new inter-protect layer was professionally applied as well as the first new antifoul. Her engine has been serviced every 250 hours with new oil and filters while at every 500 hours the fan belt and impeller have been replaced in addition to new oil and filters. The fuel filter was relocated into the engine bay and duplicated.
Zofia has been a joy to have in the family. She has allowed us to see and experience things we only dreamt about 17 years ago. Living on her for the past 12 years has made our relationship so much closer. We have extended her potential and range. It is now time for us to move ashore and reluctantly say farewell to our girl. We know however, she is ready to share her qualities and strengths with others and realise their sailing dreams. She's already AUS registered and good to GO!
What are you waiting for?

Accommodation
Zofia is configured with two cabins, both with ensuite heads. She is the owners version so the aft cabin is enormous and inviting. King Size bed, side lockers + hanging Locker. The f'rd cabin has a double sized V berth and hanging locker.
The salon contains an L shape galley with double s/s sinks, Mixer tap, glass splashback, and gas 2 burner stove with oven and grill. (Space and power socket for a Microwave, if desired). Adjustable table can create a double bunk using the in-fill cushion. Additional settee can be used as passage bunk. Nav table with seat next to instrument panel and fully labelled electrical board. The salon is VERY light and bright due to the characteristic 'cats-eye', side windows that set this model apart. Being a Deck Saloon, the ceiling is higher too. The interior of this pre-GFC yacht is timber rather than plastic. As a proportion, you'll spend most of your time in the comfortable Mediterranean Cockpit (with additional mood lighting).
