From the legendary design board of Hank Kaufman comes the beautiful Northshore 38 "Mulgannon". Northshore Yachts built these in Australia from the mid 1980's through to the mid 2000's with few changes and alterations; they were an excellent performance cruiser from the word go, and they have proven themselves time and time again in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Northshore 38s weren't built to a racing rule; they were built to be fast and comfortable yachts that were just as capable in an offshore race as they were cruising Pittwater with the kids. Northshore 38s have some pretty incredible credentials, with Octogenarian Bill Hatfield sailing one single-handed, solo, nonstop around the world the wrong way, and they have featured in most Sydney to Hobart races, including the last edition.
Going below, the companionway is wide and central, leading to a U-shaped galley to port and a navigation station to starboard, with a cozy double quarterberth. The saloon features a large U-shaped dinette that drops down to become a double to port and a settee that converts to two bunks on the starboard side. Moving forward again, there is a roomy head with a shower to port and drawers and a wet locker to starboard before a large V-berth with an infill to make it into a comfortable owner's double. It should be noted that Mulgannon has some improvements below that normally don't feature on a Northshore 38; these include a drop-down table, lee cloths, gas stove/oven rather than metho/kerro. Mulgannon also received all of the upgrades you would expect of an optimised offshore yacht, including an SSB radio and an upgraded switchboard, etc.
Moving on deck is easy via the boarding steps bonded into the transom; this is an outstanding feature that came from the very last of the Northshore 38s; however, in this case it was purchased from the original builder and installed at considerable expense. The cockpit is long and purposeful with plenty of seating, upgraded self-tailing winches, and all of the lines lead back to upgraded clutches under a well-fitted spray dodger that, unlike many, adds to the overall appearance of the vessel. The side decks are clear, making it easy to move around the deck. The yacht was re-rigged in 2021, and it has undergone a program of continual improvement ever since.
Please take a good look at the immaculate engine space, a Vetus M435 34 hp that was installed in 2022. Adding 60% more power, from 20hp to 34 hp, which should give the new owner the confidence to know that it will start on the key and power you through the headwind to get you home after a weekend away. With only 140 hours, this engine has just been run in and should provide many years of faithful service.
This yacht represents excellent value as a performance cruiser that is versatile enough to do it all. Mulgannon is loaded with equipment and features, most of which are less than five years old. With the summer sailing season fast approaching Mulgannon is ready for the twilights and weekends away with the family. As I have said, Northshore 38s are an Australian-designed and built classic that have been proven to be strong, capable and competitive for many years. Mulgannon has it all and is one of the best Northshore 38's - Vetus 34 hp with 140 hours, lots of near-new racing and cruising sail, 2021 rigging, upgraded switchboards, good electronics, recently slipped and ready to go. Mulgannon is in excellent condition and is ready to race or cruise; she just needs YOU. Are you ready? Because Mulgannon won't last long.
