The Sayer SO 40 is a fast, extremely strong cruiser/racer, designed and built for short handed offshore sailing. She is easy to sail and very comfortable, with all the equipment necessary for extended cruising. Carmen is in very good condition and has had a number of equipment upgrades in the past year, including an electric fridge/freezer and a forward v berth. The headsails are on furlers and in good condition. The engine has done low hours and has been well maintained. The mast and rigging are also in good condition and has been recently surveyed. The electronics are extensive and up to date. A brief history of the boat follows.

After former BOC round the world racer Mike Wignell lost his first Sayer designed yacht off Cape Horn due to a broken rudder, he approached Jon Sayer to design another boat to his exact requirements. The Sayer SO40 (Southern Ocean 40) was built by Wignall & Sayer together, The result is a fast, light, and extremely strong expedition and cruising yacht reinforced with Kevlar and carbon with a super strong carbon rudder. Wignall named the boat "Carmen"

This was the last boat that Jon Sayer built before he went into semi retirement and he described it as possibly his finest work. The construction process is detailed on Sayer's website, (sayerdesign ).

Carmen has sailed to Cape Horn, through the Chilean channels and extensively cruised the Pacific, including 3 crossings between Sydney and NZ and a trip to the Southern Auckland Island Group some 465 nm south of NZ. Wignall sold Carmen in 2018.

The second owner then cruised the islands and coast of South Australia before sailing the boat to Fremantle. It was sold to the current owner in 2020. The current owner has sailed locally around Fremantle and to Exmouth, some 700 nm north of Fremantle. She is currently lying in Exmouth pending delivery to Fremantle in September.

Carmen was designed to be simple and strong with easily maintained electrical and mechanical systems. There are no linings, so all structural, plumbing and electrical conduits are easily accessible. This does not detract from the finish and makes for a far more practical and easily maintained boat.

With a ballast ratio of 45% the SO 40 stands up to her sail well and a sail to displacement ratio of 24 ( in cruising trim ) ensures excellent light air performance which according to Wignall is very important as a high percentage of the winds encountered on the world cruising routes are below 15 knots.

The SO 40 is a yacht that will take its crew anywhere in the world with a minimum of fuss. The sails are the main form of propulsion and the Monitor windvane will steer the boat most of the time. There is also a heavy duty Raymarine autopilot to steer the boat when required which uses very little power due to the balanced carbon rudder which requires no more than two fingers pressure to operate the tiller in virtually all conditions. Simple systems ensure maintenance and repair is kept to a minimum, therefore reducing the cost of upkeep.

Carmen is very reluctantly offered for sale due to a change in the current owners personal circumstances.

It is offered here at a fraction of its build price.
