Roberts Spray 42. Modern Cutter rig on a Solid Glass Pilot House, now on her 3rd Circumnavigation. Only two sea wise owners meticuously built, maintained and renovated this grand lady of the sea. She was named Gratis, "because the wind is free". The second owner undertook a total renovation (2008-2013) Every system was replaced. New engine, New rigging, New sails, complete replacement of all electrics, electronics, Hydraulics, Plumbing and Refrigeration. In 2013 Gratis set sail from Adelaide Australia to Cocos Keeling where she retraced the famous voyage of Joshua Slocum, Gratis was now in the wake of the Spray.
In an amazing journey from Cocos westwards across the Indian Ocean to the Mascererene's, then to South Africa around cape Aghulas, cape of Good Hope and into the South Atlantic steering Northwards to Napoleon's Jail in St Helena. Ever Northwards, we crossed the Equator and into the Caribeean. North by North East she sailed to the Azores then Eastwards to La Rochelle France. Mast down, Gratis with her shallow draft, motored her way through the Canal Du Midi into the mediterranean and sailed again to Italy, Greece, Albania then back to Port St LouisFrance, mast and sails in storage since 2016 she is still cruising the inland water ways of europe. ( There's approximately 100,000 km of rivers and canals!)
These voyages are chronicaled in the web site, gratisaustralis. Com
Gratis was the home of the fabulous award winning author, Susea Spray and her adventures gave rise to the Childrens series, The Big Blue Boat which you can view on suseaspray. Com.
This vessel is also featured in the Designers (Bruce Roberts) web site. After her launch in 1982 when she was known as ID.
