'Elli' is a quality Canadian built cruising yacht in very good condition.
Rarely do you find a high calibre North American cruising yacht in Australia. But 'Elli' is one such vessel.
She was built in 1984 at Aloha Yachts International in Toronto, Canada for the Commodore of Toronto Yacht Club. The original owners sailed her from Canada to New Zealand to the Pacific Islands to Mooloolaba, Australia before selling her in 2003. Subsequent owners, including the current owners, have sailed her along the Queensland coast.
'Elli' is a Ted Brewer designed Aloha 34. She is a well-constructed, well presented offshore capable sloop with a comparatively high free board which makes for a dry boat. Cockpit backrests are comfortably high, an important consideration on a long trip. She is a lovely vessel to sail on all points of the compass. Light and responsive at the helm, she moves through the water with stability and a good turn of speed.
'Elli' has a 29' waterline that gives her the speed of a larger yacht and adds space to the cockpit and cabin. Her 6ft 3in headroom stretches from the companionway to the forward double V-berth. Ten (10) sturdy opening portholes and four (4) hatches bathe her in light and allow for cooling cross breezes. This is an undervalued feature of a yacht which we found so important when in Nth Queensland.
She has a large, open, airy cabin with a simple, uncluttered and practical floor plan. Though she can sleep six (6) people, she is ideal for a couple.
Ten characteristics of 'Elli' that appealed to us when we were looking for a yacht-
1. Integrated lead fin keel (not a bolt on keel).
2. Skeg hung rudder (the value of which we learnt on a GBRMP mooring).
3. Ballast to displacement ratio of 35%. We wanted stability but not a draft horse.
4. Hand laid fibreglass mat hull.
5. Easy access to the front and rear of the engine (I literally sit behind the engine to change the gearbox oil).
6. Ten (10) sturdy opening portholes that keep her cabin cool.
7. Generous use of teak.
8. Fold away table that increases cabin space.
9.6 foot 3 inch headroom throughout.
10. Her beautiful lines and her very good condition internally and externally.
An out-of-water survey report for insurance purposes by Fore and Aft Surveyors MIIMS in May 2023 concluded "I have no recommendations. Randall has kept Elli in excellent condition. "
'Elli' was last slipped, antifouled and anodes replaced in May 2023. An underwater hull inspection, undertaken when she was cleaned, occurred in June 2024.
Reports that are available upon request are an out-of-water survey report May 2023, a rigging inspection report May 2023, gas compliance certificate May 2021 and underwater hull condition report June 2024.
