Once in a while we get the opportunity to act for an owner of a vessel of this calibre. The current owner had owned Seabird for the last 27 years and has meticulously maintained her to a high standard of finish and safety.
Seabird is a UFO 34 launched in 1986 by it's owner builder at that time who fitted her out for long range shorthanded comfortable cruising. A number of UFO34's were built in Perth and fitted out to each owners specific requirements whether it was for racing or cruising and therefore each UFO has its own specific identity.
The UFO yacht was designed in the United Kingdom by Hollman and Pye for sailing in the UK and through Europe. The UFO 34 has a reputation as a very seaworthy and predictable sailing vessel.
In the racing configuration ta UFO 34 participated in the 1979 Fastnet race and in 1998 Sydney Hobart and locally in the Fremantle to Bali and Lombok races.
Seabird has cruised to Christmas Island and return and in recent years more locally between Dunsborough and Geraldton.
Seabird is currently berthed at the Fremantle sailing Club where she is currently used for coastal cruising.
From the moment you step aboard Seabird she has the feel of a well-loved and solid cruiser built to offer her owner safety and comfort from the non-skid deck to the brightwork and below deck comfort and functionality.
Seabird was not built to either a budget or timetable, but built to be a performance comfortable ocean cruiser. Construction was commenced in 1983 and not completed and launched until February 1985. Due to careful design, her interior is more functional than most 40 footers, but easily handled by two people or an experienced single hander.
The standing rigging is oversized, while the hull & deck have additional reinforcing for safe passage making. A number of safety features were integrated during construction and not added as an afterthought.
She is sloop rigged and fitted with a fully battened main sail with 3 reefing points and a genoa mounted on a roller furler for reefing purposes. The mail sail is stored in a boom bag with lazy jacks.
The generous cockpit provides an excellent work area while sailing and a comfortable area for entertaining whist at anchor under a slick dodger and semi-permanent Bimini. Additional shade covers are provided to shade the topsides from the mast to stern offering a comfortable environment on hot and sunny days. Cockpit cushions are included. A flip up teak cockpit table enables the crew and visitors to entertain in comfort.
Two solar panels above provide energy to charge her batteries and also provide shade over the cockpit. An additional bimini fitted in front of the solar panels provide valuable addition shade. Cockpit cushions are included.
Seabird is fitted with 90 cm swade covered wheel steering and this provides for a light helm. An autohelm 3000 auto pilot drives the wheel for hands off sailing or motoring.
Above the sliding hatch, the instrument panel houses the Simrad Analogue Wind instrument and also the Simard Graphic multi-function display for water depth in a graphical presentation,, boat speed and water temperature. A 12 volt cigar outlet is fitted for use by a number of 12 volt low current appliances. Ie phone charger, vacuum cleaner or lights.
As you descend the companion way over large teak step, the quality of her fit out is obvious with the galley to starboard and the full-size chart table, Simrad instrumentation and generous double quarter berth to Port. The galley provides a secure work place with two deep sinks with taps over, freezer access, with slide condiments compartment and a two-burner gimballed cooker with exhaust fan and storage of pot and pans behind.
A Bukh DV20 two cylinder diesel engine mounted under the companion way steps provides population and is also coupled to the refrigeration compressor.
Aft of the galley is a pantry for the storage of food stuffs, and continuing aft, access the rear of the engine, gear box, the 150 litre fuel tank and further aft, access to the steering cables.
Opposite the galley and mounted on the bulkhead is the comprehensive switch panel which provides switching/isolation of most cabin 12volt light and power facilities.
Moving forward to the main saloon, a teak table is off centre to port and "U" shaped seating which can be used as a single sleeping berth with lee cloth. To Starboard, is a long settee convertible to a comfortable sleep berth with lee cloths for safe sleep whist at sea and a pilot berth above for a small person or child. Book cases are fitted to the aft facing main bulkhead which also includes the Taylor heater.
Moving further the forward area comprises a toilet and wash basin to port and behind the door, caves for the storage of personal wear. A "V" berth in this area provides sleeping for two people. A large aft facing hatch above provides light, fresh air and an escape hatch in the case of an emergency.
