Sailaway -- Paul Whiting 40, craftsman-built 1985, refitted from the keel up

A strong, comfortable blue-water cruiser that is genuinely fun to sail and easy to handle. Lots of storage, a powerful autopilot, and a boat that has been set up by owners who actually went to sea in her.

Sailaway was designed by New Zealand's Paul Whiting and craftsman-built in 1985 by Alan Porter of AJ Porter Marine at Whangaparaoa, New Zealand. She was the second Paul Whiting 40 Porter built -- he liked the first one so much he built this one for himself, and kept her for six years. Her next owner cruised the Pacific for several years before sailing her to Australia, where she changed hands again. The current owners bought her at Pittwater in 2012.

What sets this boat apart is what has been done to her since.

2012 -- rig renewed Joe Walsh Rigging renewed all standing and running rigging, completely refurbished the mast and replaced the chainplates.

2016 -- five-month professional overhaul, Colin Beashel Marine, Pittwater She was stripped back in Colin Beashel's shed and rebuilt properly:

Mast unstepped, rudder removed, and every deck fitting taken off -- windows, hatches, winches, targa, stanchions, steering pedestal, toe rails and rubbing strips.
Teak decks removed and replaced with top-quality marine ply, then fibreglassed.
New rudder and rudder stock fabricated and fitted.
New fuel tank and new water tank fabricated and securely fitted.
Keel join exposed, inspected and re-glassed; the seven 25 mm bronze keel bolts re-tensioned.
Armourglass windows and hatches refurbished; swim platform rebuilt new.
Professionally painted in Awlgrip, then every fitting reinstated.
Mast, boom and rigging thoroughly checked while out, and the mast re-stepped.

Sailaway was relaunched in January 2017.

May 2026 -- rigging and safety lines, house batteries and EPIRB all replaced.

From the owners: "We lived aboard for five years, from 2018 to 2023, sailing the east coast of Australia, and we have owned her for over fourteen years. She is a beautiful boat -- a work of art -- and fun to sail. She handles all conditions without vices. "

A rare opportunity to buy a proven offshore yacht with a documented, no-shortcuts refit history. Inspection is highly recommended.
