Kelly Peterson 44 - "Pipe Dream"
Location: Scarborough, Moreton Bay, Queensland
"Pipe Dream" is a classic Kelly Peterson 44, built in 1976 by The Ocean Marine Company in Taiwan and finished off by Halvorsen's in Sydney. These yachts are legendary among blue water cruisers--built tough for when the going gets rough, but still quick and lively under sail. She'll happily cruise along at 7-8 knots in a decent breeze and can push 10 knots when the wind is on the beam and feeling spirited.
Design and Layout
This centre-cockpit beauty is a two-cabin design with plenty of space and comfort to go around. There's 6'2" (185cm) headroom throughout, a forward V-berth, and a large aft cabin--both with their own ensuites.
The saloon is roomy with plenty of seating, and the drop-down table converts into a double berth for guests. Opposite, there's a single bunk that makes an excellent sea berth. The galley is well-equipped with gas cooking, built-in refrigeration, plenty of bench space, and storage. Across from the galley is a proper nav station, generously sized and ready for passage planning.
Key Features and Upgrades
This yacht has seen substantial upgrades and meticulous care over the years:
Refit: Fully refitted, replumbed, and rewired (2010-2011).
Hull: Stripped back to bare gelcoat and repainted. Regular antifouling every 12-18 months.
Engine: Ford Lees diesel reconditioned in 2016 (under 1000 miles since). Last serviced in May 2024.
Rigging and Sails:
New rig (2019)
Genoa (2013)
Staysail and mainsail (2020)
Dodger (2022)
Electronics:
New Icom HF radio
Raymarine Axiom 9+ in the cockpit and Axiom 7 at the nav station, fully integrated via NMEA2000 and 0183
New cockpit instruments (2021)
Power and Batteries:
Six new house batteries, plus a new crank battery
New 270W 20V solar panel
Victron shunts and monitoring for efficient power management
On Deck
The centre cockpit is a standout feature, with a near-new wraparound dodger offering great protection without compromising visibility. The cockpit is well set up for sailing and navigation, with fully integrated autopilot, Raymarine plotter, and a range of data displays.
After months of hard work and a significant investment, "Pipe Dream" is ready for her next adventure. Unfortunately, due to ill health, her current owner is unable to continue the journey. She's looking for a new custodian who's ready to take her on the blue water adventures she's built for.
