1991 Deerfoot 50 | Avalon

Avalon is a semi-custom design capable of undertaking extended ocean passages with impressive speed, approaching figures of 200nm per day.

The Steve Dashew-designed yacht is relatively narrow, has a light displacement and a long waterline, and is extremely strong and seaworthy while being easily handled by a couple.

The yacht features a moderately deep fin-keel, a balanced spade rudder, slightly raked bow and a reverse-transom stern fitted with a swim step and two watertight stern compartments.

Avalon is a very pretty boat with a flush-deck design complemented by the addition of the beautifully curved hard dodger. She has been rigged as a cutter with the previously removeable inner forestay now permanently attached.

The interior comprises a king-sized island berth forward, a large saloon, and two quarter berths as well as a gourmet cook's galley.

Avalon boasts a walk-in machinery space, full complement of marine electronics and two independent autopilot systems. There are watertight bulkheads fore and aft, plenty of pumps, as well as radios and batteries placed so that communications can be preserved.

The yacht has enjoyed many upgrades with the most recent including: replaced standing rigging (wires and halyards); pulling and repainting the mast and boom, replacing all the mast hardware, halyards and running rigging (2022); new Westerbeke 5.5KW generator (2018); new Victron Inverter/Charger, and a Victron step-down (up) transformer; Vetus bow thruster; new dinghy davits; upgraded watermaker and new membranes; upgraded Sat Com and Wifi communications equipment, plus new sails and rig improvements.

The main engine is a Mercedes Nanni 72HP diesel, and auxiliary power comes from a Westerbeke 5.5KVA generator as well as hard solar panels mounted on a dedicated rack on the bimini above the aft cockpit.

Avalon was built to an extremely high standard by Cecil M. Lange & Sons, custom boat builders at Port Townsend, WA, USA before being shipped east to Maine for outfitting by Hinckley Yachts.
