Cascade "A very special boat" Chas from TAS.

Cascade, a fast cruiser, classic sublime beauty with performance to match.
With a career designing for S&S and Compass Yachts, now a longtime famed superyacht designer, Angelo Lavranos designed Cascade and his plans were brought to life by the ever revered Wilson Brothers of Port Cygnet in Tasmania, Australia's oldest running boat yard, taking three years to construct at an eye watering cost of 300k in 1983.

When launched, Cascade was the largest ocean racing yacht built in Tasmania post WW2.

Built as a fast Cruiser, she was launched as a sloop but is now rigged as a cutter sloop.

Cascade is recognised around the world as one of the finest yachts ever built in Australia.

A page in "Built to Last" is dedicated to Cascade, a book often found in the libraries of wooden boat aficionados.

The most coveted timbers for boat building have been used by a family of artisans in the construction and fit out of Cascade.
Ancient Huon Pine that was cut by hand, then floated down rivers by men and dragged from the bush by men working Clydesdales. Along with King Billy Pine, a timber so rare it is now only used for art. All crafted on the shores of Port Cygnet, Tasmania. The famed birds eye of the Huon Pine is featured throughout.

Having only five owners over her lifetime, Cascade has been fastidiously maintained and enjoyed by all who have owned her, giving her a wealth of provenance not enjoyed by most yachts of her period.

In the last 25 years, over 3.5 million dollars has been spent to make Cascade the vessel she is today.
Highly respected Australian shipwrights Beashels Marine and Norman Wright and Sons have been responsible for much work completed on Cascade in the last two decades.

Upto 2019 Cascade was in commercial survey and registration in NSW but was never used commercially having had only private Australian ships registration.

Often the most eyecatching yacht in the anchorage or the marina, Cascade is always a talking point. If you don't like people approaching you and telling you that you own a beautiful yacht, maybe Cascade is not for you.

Sail number 3390, Cascade has maintained the same sail number her whole life.

Her many accomplishments include.

Sydney to Hobart in 3days 18hrs
Winner of Antigua Race Week, longest trip to the start line 14,000NM
Cascade is mentioned in a few different books
Once owned by Shirley Strachan the lead singer of the famed Australian rock legends Skyhooks
Stories of Mick Jagger from the Rolling Stones strutting his stuff on deck
Sailed the Atlantic, Sailed the Pacific, Survived some Cyclones.
Registration accepted for 2018,2022 & 2024 Tasmanian Wooden Boat Festival.

Single handed sailing is not a problem with Cascade, no need to leave the cockpit if you don't want to, she has sailed single-handedly up and down the east coast of Australia many times.
The cockpit is a centre aft arrangement; it is very deep and very safe whilst at sea.

A cutaway fin keel with a solid bronze hinged centreboard, the draft is 2m up and 3.8m down.
Her draft allows her into all of the popular anchorages, creeks and rivers along the Australian Eastern seaboard.

Her finish is second to none, with a 2 pack international awlcraft paint job, she is waxed and polished religiously. A golden cove strip and golden boot top, she is pure class with her highly varnished brightwork including the teak capping rail surrounding the entire boat.

Cascade is a dry boat, if you have water on the decks while sailing, you're doing something wrong.  After the 1983 Sydney to Hobart, talk around town was, no boots got wet during the race. The freeboard is quite significant and the slight tumblehome and beamy midships deflects any chop beautifully.

The hull is a work of art, built for the Southern Ocean and waters surrounding Tasmania, she is an inspiring boat at sea. She has been compared to sailing an Etchells. With the bronze hinged centre board up she goes down wind like a breeze, with the board down and three sails out she will point with the best of them.
Composite construction, West Systems cold moulded 5 x 6mm quint diagonal construction, made up of 4 layers of Huon and 1 of King Billy, then Dynel sheathed from new. Dynel is 3 times more abrasive resistant compared to fibreglass. The build resulted in a hull that is extraordinarily strong and also incredible quiet but rather light for its size.
Constructed with a laminated internal main ring member, the mast is keel stepped. The massive stainless steel chainplates are mounted to the ring and not the hull. Hence the hull is as fair as the day she was launched.
A sailing yacht hull does not get any better than this, sound as the day it was built and is still considered state of the art construction.
Spirit Yachts, the recent winners of Euro Yacht of the year, are producing their newest hulls in this same manner, only double diagonal, so with 3 less layers.
She has an anti counter stern that has a fine trailing edge, it makes for a comfortable boat in a following sea.

Cascade was re-decked in Australia fairly recently from a private stash of old growth Burmese Teak, over marine ply. There are no fasteners in the deck, the deck has not yet been re-sanded, the teak is left to silver and is treated with salt water often. The deck will last a lifetime.

Cascade is fitted with multiple custom made Sunbrella covers by the award winning Dave's Trimming.
Cascades decks can be completely covered for sun and weather protection with its 3 covers. The main boom cover converts into a tent style arrangement for when at anchor or entertaining, the shade from the tent starts at the shrouds and comes back to the transom.
There is a floating Sunbrella bimini for shading the cockpit.
The solar arch has a permanent Sunbrella shade for the helm.

10 people can sit comfortably around the fold down teak cockpit table for meals.
6 can be seated at the saloon table for meals.

There is a felt lined liquor cabinet finished in King Billy Pine and Huon Pine in the saloon.

The very large nav station/chart table is also lined with felt. This is a convenient space for an office whilst onboard.

In the forepeak there is a workshop, with workbench with a mounted vice. With 16 pigeon holes and various drawers, storage cupboards and shelves, it is a very well designed and practical space.

Cascade has all accommodation forward of the saloon.
There are seven berths.
In the forward cabin, which is aft of the workshop there is a small double pullman bed on the port side, in this same room there is a single berth or couch on the starboard side.
Aft of that cabin on the starboard side is two bunks which can be converted into a couch, very convenient as passage crew and also day beds.
Continuing aft on the starboard side there is a day head with shower and toilet opposite the door to the master cabin.
The master cabin situated on the port side has a double pullman bed with a full-length robe, also an ensuite with shower and toilet.
The 2 electric toilets have always been set to flush with freshwater, though can be flushed using saltwater if desired.
Every berth has a lee cloth.
Every cabin has Lewmar hatches, which are tinted and they can be locked.
New custom made latex innerspring mattress in the pullman upfront.
Custom innerspring in the master cabin.
Each room has lots of storage including underbed storage and drawers and lockers and book shelves.

The accommodation layout is perfect for a family or a couple entertaining friends.

The galley is on the starboard side of the saloon, well appointed with a Miele combi oven, along with a gimballed stainless steel gas 3 burner cooktop with gas oven and a double stainless-steel sink in the island counter. With 2 large eutectic fridges and one very large eutectic deep freeze, they can be run off the engine driven pump if motoring or the genset or shore power.
The galley has a 240v 125L front opening fridge/freezer that runs 24/7 off the inverter via the 360w solar.

The saloon is a delight, with only two steps down from the cockpit, you are in the saloon and the galley, there are no vertical ladders in Cascade, which really makes everything so much easier.  The saloon has a large leather couch, under and behind all the seats is even more storage, Cascade has ample storage for a non-stop circumnavigation.
Cascade can actually be helmed from inside the comfort of the saloon, with a portable autopilot and 360 degree views from inside the saloon, this is often done in wet weather. The windows of the saloon are 10mm thick acrylic, these were replaced mid 2024.
A fitted carpet with a foam underlay was recently made to protect the teak and holly soles in the saloon.

Outside there is a pushpit mounted prep board and high quality custom made stainless steel BBQ.

The swim platform has a fish cleaning station and outdoor freshwater shower.

There are two pipe bunks for crew under the cockpit. They're just over 2m long, they also serve well as storage shelves.
Under the cockpit is a massive amount of storage space, more than usually seen in a cruising yacht.
Enough space for 2 tenders, 2 bikes, 2 underwater scooters, a swim platform, seabrake, 2 boarding ladders, fishing gear, dive gear, beach chairs, etc etc.
Aft of the cockpit is the lazarette, this is accessible via 2 hatches, there is ample storage room here also, with enough room for all sheets, lines, fenders and various assorted equipment.

The 24v Muir Thor 4200 windlass has the ability to winch manually in an emergency. There are two spare 88Lb anchors stowed under the cockpit, one is a Manson CQR, the other is a Manson Danforth, the main anchor is a 100Lb Manson Boss in Stainless with a Mantus S4 swivel.

Under Sail Cascade recently recorded a speed of 18.4knots surfing downwind in 30 knots being sailed by a crew of 2; with a photo to prove it.
240NM days under sail are a common occurrence. Plenty of 200NM single handed days have been logged.

With bare poles and the engine alone, Cascade will cruise at 7.5knots doing 1850rpm using around 3.5LPH, or 2250rpm and it is around 7LPH at 8.5knots, these figures vary of course. With 160hp and the fixed bladed prop there is plenty of grunt when you require it.
The engine can actually be removed from the boat with no cutting involved. The entire sole of the saloon can be lifted up and removed by one person with quick fasteners, making servicing the engine a breeze.
The engine room is second to none, everything is practical and completely accessible making everything easy to work on. It is also spotless.

The MFD can be operated via the FURUNO app including way point navigation, radar, maps, sounder, weather fax via tablet or phone. Good for if off watch, and you want to check progress etc. The system can run two tablets or 1 phone and 1 tablet at once and it can also be used via the 26 inch portable screen or the 32 inch smart TV.

Cascade could be quite the race contender with her handicap. All boat measurements are available for formula calculations.
Cascade is in show winning, world wide cruising, club racing, turn key ready condition.

Cascade was professionally surveyed at the beginning of 2024, this survey is available for viewing in person.
