Mainship 34 Trawler: Practical, Economical NZ Cruiser.

The Mainship 34 Trawler is a smart, confidence-inspiring cruiser ideally suited to New Zealand waters. Designed and built in the United States, it combines a solid glass hull, high flared bow, practical trawler profile and comfortable accommodation in a capable 34-foot package. For buyers wanting economy, safety, space and genuine coastal cruising ability, this vessel presents a very appealing option.

Power is provided by a single 315hp Yanmar diesel on shaft drive, a proven and sensible arrangement for local cruising. At around 8 knots she settles into an economical displacement cruise, while retaining the ability to push toward 12 knots when timing or conditions require. This balance of efficiency and useful speed makes her well suited to Hauraki Gulf weekends, Coromandel exploring and longer coastal passages with careful planning.

Handling is another strong point. A full keel, shaft drive, bow thruster and ZF electronic controls give the boat predictable tracking, confident marina manoeuvring and relaxed passage-making. Dual helm stations add real practicality: enjoy the view from the flybridge in settled weather or operate from the protected lower helm when the wind, rain or chop arrives.

On deck, the Mainship feels secure and purposeful. The cockpit is reached from the swim platform through a proper transom door and is sheltered by the bridge overhang. Wide side decks, raised bulwarks, high sides and substantial stainless-steel rails make movement around the boat safe and reassuring, an important advantage in changeable New Zealand conditions. The anchoring system is also cruising-ready, with an electric windlass, deck controls, helm controls, two large forward cleats and a solid Samson post.

The generous flybridge is a standout feature for a cruiser of this size. An L-shaped seat to port doubles as a sunbed and includes useful storage, while companion seating sits around the centre helm to create a sociable command area. Raymarine multifunction displays, radar, sounder/fishfinder, chart plotting, VHF radio, compass, spotlight controls and windlass controls are sensibly arranged for easy operation. A bimini, full enclosure covers, floodlighting, Magma barbecue and bait board extend the boat's versatility for cruising, entertaining and fishing.

Inside, the saloon is light, practical and inviting, with folding aft doors, large sliding side windows, comfortable loungers, a large table, entertainment system and well-positioned electrical panel. The lower helm, finished in varnished timber with a ship-style wheel, offers excellent visibility and a protected all-weather driving position. Forward, the galley is more than a token installation, with refrigeration, stainless-steel sink, three-burner gas stove and oven, Corian benchtops, under-floor storage and a teak-and-holly sole.

Accommodation is centred around a forward cabin with a centreline double berth, opening portholes and overhead hatch ventilation. The enclosed head and shower are genuinely usable, with a practical layout, vanity and opening porthole. Systems access has also been thoughtfully arranged, with key service points placed within reach and good insulation helping keep saloon noise levels low.

For Kiwi owners seeking a manageable cruiser with real capability, the Mainship 34 Trawler delivers a compelling mix of seaworthiness, economy, comfort and function. Whether used for weekends away, extended summer cruising or relaxed coastal exploring, she is a practical and confidence-building vessel ready to make time on the water easier and more enjoyable.
